you dont say what year/model as there is slight differnces in some but its pretty simple.

1/ pop the horn or center cover off the steering wheel to reveal the bolt.

2/ Remove the bolt in the centre that holds the steering wheel on(not sure of the size but its its a big bolt).

3/ now unscrew the plastic shroud around the ignition there are 2 holes underneath a crosshead/phillips screwdriver should do it(at this time just remove the bottom half).

4/ unplug the cables leading to the indicator stalks and ignition there is 3 i think.

5/ slide the indicator and wiper arms off tilting them may help but its easier to put them back if there all together and dont come apart.

6/ now you need an alun key/hex key there is one screw on the left side or the ignition barrel, just remove it with the key and it will slide out with the top of the shroud on it.

only problems that you may have is a bush on the steering wheel that stops the ignition barrel coming out and i have no clue how to remove it, i have been trying :S and the other problem is make sure all the lights and wipers work before putting the wheel bolt on, you can disconnect the high beam very easilily and put it back wrong.

That would be when a grinder is required, been there and tried to remove it on a passrat, ended up grinding a chunk out of it to remove it and change the barrel over

Not so easy as all that, if its never been done before you need to drill a hole in the housing in a specific location to release a clip, then the lock barrel comes out.

As for the adaptor, what you need is a decent puller and a pair of pliers.  Once you've removed the wheel & stalks clamp the pliers round the adaptor and butt them up to the tiny lip round it. then get the pullers clamped onto the pliers and slooooooowly tighten them whilst keeping a firm grip on the pliers/puller.  Its a pain in the arse but it will come off eventually, I've done it sucessfully on my Driver and my GTI :)

yeah some people just take the whole column out and chuck it in a vice!  Advantage with that is if you do that you don't have to remove the adaptor at all, just drill the hole & swap :)

I've just bought a mark 2 golf gti and am transfering the locks from my wife's old golf driver, as we have spare keys and then it will be the same key for everything as we have already changed the locks. Cheers for all your help
