CarPlay for 2015 GTI
« on: 15 September 2018, 18:29 »
Hi

Hoping for a quick answer here. Potentially going to buy a GTI PP tomorrow to replace my current 16 plate. Dealer is in Leicester and I’m in Sheffield and the salesman didn’t seem to have much of a clue over the phone. I NEED CarPlay and need to know if it’s not already added will I be able to get it added? The car is September 2015 registered I think. I’m sure it was around that time that the discovery media head unit was upgraded to gen 2? Anyone else had it added afterwards and how much did it cost?

Cheers
Black, 3 Door, MY '16 GTI.
Dynaudio, AppConnect.

Is there an easy way to see whether you’ve got GEN 1 or 2?

I think it was introduced as an option for model year 2016 cars when the MIB2 infotainment units were introduced, so cars built from (I think ) build week 22 in 2015. Car Net App Connect was an extra cost option; around £100 if spec’d from new. I think the current cost to have it retro added is around £250.

@titchy; if App Connect is a deal breaker for you, be aware that if the car you’re considering doesn’t have it, not all of the MIB2 infotainment units are App Connect compatible.

2020 Polo GTI Plus; Pure White, DSG (because they all are)
Gone but not forgotten;
2016 Polo GTI; Blue Silk
2011 mk6 Golf GTD; Carbon Grey
2007 mk5 Golf GT (2.0 170bhp TDI version); Deep Black Pearl
2002  mk4 Golf GTI (the 150 bhp diesel version); Deep Black Pearl

If the car was built after week 22 2015, then it should have the MIB2 Discover Nav that is compatible with App Connect.

I'd ask the dealer to email you some pics of the unit switched on. If the App Connect icon is there then you should be in business, as this should just be a case of purchasing activation via the dealer. No App Connect icon would not bode well.

If you already have a 2016 car then you should already have MIB2. The MIB1 (that isn't App Connect compatible) has a slightly smaller screen with a fatter bezel.

Cheers guys. The screen looks the same as mine from the photos. I’ll speak to the dealer in the morning and get them to have a look before I make the journey.

This looks like MIB 2 to me. Can anyone else confirm?

That does indeed look like an MIB2 unit to my eyes.

However, as SRGTD has already mentioned, not all MIB2 units will accept retro-activation of App Connect. You really need to see that there is an App Connect icon on the menu screen.
