Mk1 GTi running hot
« on: 02 April 2003, 00:28 »
Hi there, new to this forum but not the website. Hope i can get and give help here.

I've got a Mk1 Gti 1588, 1981. Was in bit dodgy condition when i got it, but it's working fine now.

Can anyone tell me whether the 1588 Gti engine nomally runs quite hot? I don't mean overheating or anything just getting hot quickly.

Cheers anyone.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Both the 1600 and the 1800 do warm up very quick. Whats worrying you?

I'm not quite sure if i need to worry really. Just being cautious i guess. ?
Had severe over heating problems when i first got it. Cured that by taking the thermostat out.
Saying that, the coolant still gets quite hot very quickly.

Cheers

Was the old thermostat jammed closed? In which case why didn't you replace it? Or is there a more serious underlying overheating problem that removing the thermostat has disguised. Maybe you should be worried.
That little thermostat does a great job in making sure the engine gets to operating temperature nice and quickly and then keeping the engine at an optimum temperature.

The thermostat was jammed so i took it out. Seems it cured the major overheating problem.

I was under the impression that the thermostat was not an essential part?

The engine does take a little slower to heat up now though (but not really a major difference). Seems fine when actually moving (ie. air running thought radiator)

One thing to keep an eye on anyway.

:) had a simular problem with a 1457cc mark1 golf auto the temperature gauge would be well up the scale, carried out all the normal troubleshooting procedures i.e. flushed the radiator, back flushed the cooling system including the heater, changed the temp sensor, eventually found the problem by accident it was the radiator cap (i could see steam coming from around the base of the cap) purchased the right cap problem solved ?:)
