Diesel starting problem
« on: 30 April 2003, 15:12 »
Hey guys, I've got a problem with my MK1 Diesel. Sometimes when I turn the key to start it, nothing happens. The pre-heater (glowplugs) works and the dash lights don't dim when the key is fully turned. What I was hoping is that someone could tell me whether there is a starter relay or something similiar that sends power from the ignition to the starter motor that may be playing up? Or is the ignition on the way out.

Any help greatly appreciated :D

Hi Mate
Hope I can help.

Does it atleast make a clicking sound when you turn the key?
What im thinking it maybe is the starter solenoid. It may need cleaning or replacing.
If the lights dont dim on the dash, then power is not even been drawn to the starter.

Thanx for the reply JayGTi.
The starter doesn't click. The only sound is a faint click from the fusebox, which I think is a relay sending power to the glow plug circuit.
Your right, no power seems to be drawn to the starter, so thats why I'm thinking the problem might be before the starter.
