1995 MK3 gti tailgate lock is stuck

hi,

The tailgate lock on my 1995 8v gti decided to stick, from yesterday, I sprayed it with wd40 yesterday - am hoping that it will operate later tonight when i try it.

What happened was, when I put the key into the tailgate lock, press and turn the key clockwise the tailgate opens SLIGHTLY but not fully releasing the tailgate.

I have managed to open it once from the inside with a screwdriver.

I wanted to find out if it may be necessary to replace the locking mechanism, or might there be a simple problem with the connecting pieces from the key barrel to the locking mechanism?

If I need to replace the lock mechanism, is it almost as simple as unscrewing the two allen bolts, and perhaps disconnecting the link to the key barrel?

If it happens to be complex, is there a tutorial/diagram about someplace on the internet?

if the tailgate opens slightly, that would suggest the keylock has worked but the catch itself is faulty. maybe it's just gunked up and needs a good clean/wd40.
