Title: Golf MK4 1.8 GTI-T MPG
Post by: kcolevol on 02 August 2008, 11:27
Just wondering what miles per gallon people get on average if their 1.8 turbos?  I have had a maximum of 42.something but average about 32mpg.

1.8t AGU

Depends highly how I drive.I only do around town miles really(SE london) if I drive smart,Gradual pregression 1500-2300rpm shifts ,high gear as possible,Lots of engine braking using the gearbox, least amout of brakes etc etc I can 28mpg on a short 4 mile journey to work somtimes 30mpg.If i drive fairly normally I get around 25mpg odd driving like a wayne kerr on empty roads around 18-20 mpg Never really tested the car on motorway since getting the temo sender fixed.Don't think it would do more than early 30's as 5th gear seems really short and doesn't feel like its at ease anything about 70-80mph really

I don't really know how people get averages of 30-40 mpg.I think it depends highly on where you live and it seems alot of people on these forums are farmers!

I just come back from my brothers wedding in Torquay, having to drive down from Manchester.

There and back cost me just over £110 in petrol, which is not bad at, seeing there and back is 500 miles. I averaged around 38/42 MPG on the motorway with a average speed of 75/80.

Happy with the cost , as it would of cost me and the girlfriend nearer £200 for the train there.

First time I have been down that part of Devon..f**k me..how many huge hills are there??!!  Not sure my clutch licked it down there

Yup mine runs 15:1 fuel at part throttle when load on less than 100%, it's a fuel strategy map setup.  Plus the water injection helps the combine driving mpg.

this is somthing I 100% want.. as i either drive extremly fast or extremely slow ( 90% of the time slow )as when i communte to work I driver very considerate towards my MPG

Could you set somthing up similar on my car mate?( when I come for a map)?
I'm still not sure weather to go k03's or not,But i think I'm gonig to end with with a k03's then drive up with a new TIP fitted while my mechanics at it.

I get that on the way to work and the car is totally standard. Easy progessive acceleration, no heavy foot and you'll get it. Use the gears.

Dude i'm 100% driving that way its just a 3.5 mile journey around se london/kent at 8am (rush hour) By the time i Get to work the temp needles just aobut hit middle. If i drove the same kindda journey just longer to let the engine get up to temp it would be 35mpg nps.

I just can't think of the car ever hitting 40+ mpg.. maybe at a steady 60 mph for 30 mins or somthing but anything higher and your sitting at 3k odd in 5th

3.5 miles, you'll never see anything more than early 30s.

my 1.8t has never hit 40mpg lol, past threads i have read made me think everyone else was getting better mpg than me but reading this im just in the same boat, usually get 23-28mpg town driving with heavy right foot sometimes a little too heavy lol,and about 33-38mpg on the motorway depending on speed of course

Yeah i know the cars had a new engine in thel last 2k, fully rebuilt every consumable part relpaced etc.I literally don't use the brakes on the way to work LOL just engine and carful thougth to how the driver ahead of me is driving but I'm not actually driving that slow..Just gotta think about it.. i find it a fun challange :D Maybe a remap as nick said would help I cant think of my car getting 47mpg for a real journey..Btw is your zx6 the Big piston fork model? My friends got one really strong engine and handles amazing!
