Title: Car definitions section...
Post by: 08micsta on 17 March 2008, 10:27
Can we possibly get a section where definitions for words etc can be read?
E.G- Whats a manifold? Catback?

And people can write their definition and it makes it easier for people like myself to understand the project threads without asking stupid questions.

Im not sure if this has been asked yet.

That would be a website in itself, and a huge one at that. If you don't know what something is, google it

You could Google it.. But this is a car forum so I assumed it would be a nice extra. I mean. If we can get a "spotted" section. Why not one of these?

I fail to see how a spotted section relates to this. What you're asking for is a technical definition and explanation of basically every component used to build a car, for which there are far better existing resources available than something we could write or compile.

No. You misunderstood what I am asking for.

I dont want a "What every part of a car does" section. JUst a section where the most common words with relation to Golfs can be kept. You go into the MK1 section and try and understand half of what is said there... I dont.

I realise you could just google it. But it would be nice considering its a car forum  :embarassed:

To be honest Dinx - think it could just be a langauge issue for you friend across the waters

Different terminology

Like we call it a Bonnet - the yanks call it a Hood

Boot - Trunk etc

SO I think ( but proberly wrong ) is that he wants key tuning parts identifying / explaining in each Mark section - not every part just commonly used ones

Yup. Thanks for helping Di out

Basically. I go into the MK5 section and read a post. I understand what they are taling about etc. But when I go into say the MK1 section and someone says this has broken or that is not working.

I dont know what it means. So what I was asking for was a section where the most common words and phrases that relate to that MK of Golf are.

E.G:

Whats a DV Valve?
Whats Catback system?

I dont know what these words mean which makes understanding the posts rather difficult for me. Im sure Im not the only one with this problem?

i get what you mean, DV valve is a good example. not sure what it is, i assume diverter valve, but its irrelevant to me so i don't really care.

catback system... surely it would be obvious from the rest of the topic?  you know what a cat is, right? catalytic converter? on your exhaust? so a cat back system would be an exhaust system, from the catalytic converter back. ie not the cat, down pipe or manifold. i personally don't see this working, logic would expalin most things, if you don't know what the topic is about and cant work it out from the rest of the topic then its either irrelevant to you (or anyone else) or if not, ask!

The thing is. If I have to ask everytime I dont understand something I will be asking a lot. I enjoy learning about cars etc so a section like this would be usefull.

Nevertheless. I think "NO" has already been decided  :embarassed:

If you don't think it'll take a long time, I think you misunderstood what he's asking for. Not just common abbreviations or acronyms but pretty much every part or component that you wouldn't find being discussed in the mk5 section.

I just think there are better places you can go to read about how an engine, transmission or suspension system works.

and no russ..wrong end of the stick there completely lol

I think the term you were all grasping for was Glossary.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary - Just incase you need to know what one is

Personally I think it's a good idea. Nothing OTT but a list of commonly used jargon is always handy for newcomers. I'll even write one and maintain it if no one else wants to.
