mk6 Golf v BMW 1-series
« on: 04 September 2009, 21:46 »
I'm interested whether any of you considered or are considering the 1-series when also contemplating the mk6 Golf?

Nope, I needed a five door for my chaps, the 1 has no leg room in the rear at all (and boot is tiny).

1-series price is more comparable.

I went and had a look at a 1 series, just to help gauge the Golf against its competition. It may be well screwed together and a better car to drive round a track but other than that I thought it was horrid. Styled by a blind man and with a cheap nasty interior. No wonder Audi is doing so well.

The only thing I envy the 1 series for is its RWD. Apart from that, I don't like it at all.

I did consider a second hand 130i M sport as that looks better than the standrad SE and 260 bhp with rwd is not to be sniffed at.

Despite 5 door being available, it is still too impractical, too small, visually challenged and would be more expensive to run I reckon.

I've had a 5 series previously and the interior of the 1 is similar in design so wouldn't be enough of a "change" for me.

Also I like the idea of getting a new car specced to my taste and something that would for a short time anyway be relatively rare on the roads.

But the BMW diesel engines are excellent. If you dont need the space of the Golf I think the 1-series is a pretty cool car. The interior plastics may not be top quality but it has "interesting" styling. My dad just got one and it's pretty cool actually.

only consideration was an A3 black edition, or s3.
i hate the 1 series
i've gone for the gti primarily on exterior looks and a newer cabin, even though i think the a3 is slightly better money- i.e. more standard equipment = less option money spent and lost on resale.
Just sold an S5 - previously mkV R32 DSG Metallic Grey with RNS 510 (thanks to MortyGT140)

Have driven the 1 series on a couple of occasions and dare I say it was quite impressed: :embarassed:

Its well balanced  and the steering in particular  very precise, its also very refined for a small car.

The engines  really stand out though- especially the twin turbo diesel 123d models. The performance/economy mix of these puts them in a different league to the competition

Yes not sure on the looks of the low spec models but an M sport in the coupe or 3 door to me looks pretty good.
