Title: Mk2 Jetta G60
Post by: Simeon on 03 March 2011, 12:27
Been wanting a new daily for a little while so have been scanning the classifieds all over for mk2 Golfs and Jettas. Spotted a Golf I liked the look of, but got messed about by the seller, which was lucky as it turned out because this Jetta Gti turned up locally for a decent price  :)

Tax and test
90k with full service history - just been serviced too
Pas, C/L, Sunroof
Electric mirrors
Awful stainless exhaust - sounds proper chavy so needs changing!
Full leather interior
Cavernous boot as standard  :grin:

As collected;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00673.jpg)

It has a few niggles;

It drives like a boat due to soggy standard suspension
Steering column is bent
Old alarm system disconnected but wiring left is a bit messy
Rear brakes need new pads

Soooo, have a few bits to help sort the above;

Coilovers;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00669.jpg)

Wheels (I do have a set of four!);

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00668.jpg)

Mk4 rear calipers and Goodridge hoses;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00665.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00737.jpg)

16v hubs and 280mm discs;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00664.jpg)

With a few parts sorted it was time to stick it in the garage;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00674.jpg)

Old vs new;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00675.jpg)

Fitted - had to drive it to work following day so left standard brakes for now;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00676.jpg)

Looking promising 8)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00678.jpg)

This shows how bad the steering column was;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00684.jpg)

So, stripped the dash down a bit;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00686.jpg)

You can see the bent part of the bracket on the right;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00696.jpg)

Refitted new column with mk3 stalks - nice and straight :)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00735.jpg)

The original clocks were broken and in the boot, so while the dash was apart I thought I'd change the mileage on the replacement clocks to suit;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00714.jpg)

Got a couple of days off, so started on this;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00738.jpg)

New hubs on;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00739.jpg)

Rears:

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00740.jpg)

Stripped down and cleaned up;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00742.jpg)

Mk4 rear calipers :)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00745.jpg)

Fronts;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00748.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00750.jpg)

Just got to bleed the brakes and adjust handbrake, then going to give it a tune up as per Rubjonnys guide. It's going to get an ABF towards the end of the summer too.

Looks like a good motor overall, low miles too!.....

what do you reckon fecked that column up then, attempted theft at some point?

Nice work so far.  :afro:

Looks a cracking buy, not many around these days.

Steering column was a bit strange.

Yeah pretty low mileage for a Gti, had one owner for the first 16 years - got all the paperwork including original bill of sale and documents re a private plate he had put on it at the dealership.

Yeah the steering column was the result of a break in no doubt, looks like someone has tried (and failed) to break the steering lock and resulted in bending the column bracket. My initial worry of course was accident damage, but everything is straight - had a good poke round it.

Cheers for the comments :) Think I know that diesel Jetta mate, owners username is Mozza?

Not a great pic, but it's getting there! Getting tracking done in the morning, then just need to give it a final tidy - remove old stickers and such like - then next weekend I'm taking it to a mate to have it polished, will definitely get a load more pictures then  :D

Small update, it's been doing a fine job on daily duties :) You can see in the pics above that the front bumper had dropped on both sides so I got my hands on a pair of brackets from an aftermarket bumper to replace them.

Unfortunately I didn't realise that the aftermarket brackets are different to the genuine ones .. the pic shows that aftermarket ones are too short;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00860.jpg)

So I decided to chop up the original broken brackets and plastic weld them up;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00861.jpg)

Job done :) Rubbish pic but it's sat nice and straight both sides now. A minor job but worthwhile.

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00863.jpg)

More updates to follow soon :)

Cheers guys, yeah you don't see too many G60s in Jettas eh, should still be good fun even with the big arse hanging off the back wheels :tongue:

Got some new front stoppers and a 23mm master cylinder to go on too :)

Picked up a new interior yesterday so will be fitting that over the next couple of days along with a couple of other bits, but today I polished it up so it's looking pretty reasonable (from a short distance away at least :tongue: )

A sort of half and half shot, but my camera is rubbish so you have to look hard!

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00884.jpg)

After a coat of wax etc;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00886.jpg)

Cheers for the comments

Things are moving a bit slower than anticipated as had to fit a new gearbox and a few other bits into my mates mk2, but finally got a day on the Jetta :)

Plan is to strip it out then add;

Gti interior
Black carpets
Front electric windows
Remote central locking
Mk3 fuel tank and wiring
Refurbed rear beam with poly bushes from other Jetta
New brake lines
Replace n/s rear plastic arch as it is scuffed
Weld necessary areas

Few pics of progress;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00893.jpg)

Nice tidy rear panel :)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00896.jpg)

But a little rot where the boot seal join is :(

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00895.jpg)

Inside of car was pretty grubby so going to get a good clean;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00894.jpg)

Rear o/s arch needs a little bit of attention;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00898.jpg)

And then there's the usual spot where the fuel tank bolts in :rolleyes:

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00901.jpg)

All this work means I can get the G60 engine ready and hopefully drop it in quite quickly - this is my daily so have to plan its garage time.

Didn't get as much done today as I'd hoped, but that always seems to be the way. Few pics, mostly self explanatory;

Snow foam and pressure washed the underside;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00902.jpg)

Then dropped the rear beam off;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00910.jpg)

Started tackling one of the arches, but as always when you start digging it gets worse;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00915.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00918.jpg)

Other side of same arch;

Bit more done today :) though welder was spitting at me loads which was a pain (literally!)

Chopped out the rot in the fuel tank mount;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00922.jpg)

Made up a patch, bit crude but fitted ok;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00923.jpg)

First patch on bottom of arch;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00926.jpg)

Second;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00927.jpg)

Third;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00928.jpg)

Formed the lip;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00930.jpg)

Welded up, just need to run the grinder over it in the morning :)

Cleaned up the arches to stonechip them;

Refurbed rear beam ready to be fitted;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00167.jpg)

Stonechip on arches, this is getting painted over in fresh Tornado red tomorrow;

Arch roller in place;

Result (yet to be sealed);

Cheers

Just popped in for a cuppa mid electric window fitting so thought I'd stick a couple of pics up of todays progress;

A good friend popped round to sort out my engine loom, before;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00957.jpg)

After (wrapped and labelled) :)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC00959.jpg)

Finished rolling and sealing the arches, then layed down some fresh Tornado red. Also fitted the brake compensator and all the new rear brake lines along with the Goodridge hoses. Tomorrow the Mk3 fuel tank can go in and I'll put the suspension and plastic arches back on, followed by the interior :)

Can't run big bumpers without plastic arches mate ;) I have trimmed the lip on the plastic arch to suit the rolled arch so gives me a bit more room under there.

Did a few jobs today, managed to get hold of a boot seal in good condition so fitted that. Also, bought a new timing light as mine died a little while ago so thought I check out the timing on the Jetta as its never run right .. glad I did.

Pic below shows how far out it was! Supposed to be set to the 6deg btdc mark, but some muppet had set it to about 20deg atdc!! Needless to say runs much more smoothly now :)

Ive noticed a few people on here use the arch roller tool, do you buy them or hire them?  :undecided:

Usually hired from eBay.

A few people are making them from widow makers and skateboard wheels now.

I bought mine a while ago, but a quick note; they aren't easy to use! if you are not planning on covering them up with plastic arches then don't even consider having a go yourself as it will cost you a lot more in the long run than just biting the bullet and getting a reputable bodyshop to do the job.

If anyone near Huddersfield wants to borrow one then you can borrow mine for considerably less than the 60quid on ebay, just drop me a pm.

Another afternoon under the car today, but more on that later. Have been spending a few pennies this week, mostly on tyres - Yokohama AD08s;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01017.jpg)

These are the wheels they're going on - very rare 6.5j x 15" forged Le Castellets :)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01018.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01015.jpg)

Not much clearance over the S2 brakes though, going to put some 3mm spacers in;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01011.jpg)

So, on with todays efforts. Firstly I pulled out the front crossmember to fit a poly front mount. Old;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01010.jpg)

New;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01019.jpg)

In place;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01021.jpg)

Also fitted the front Eibach anti roll bar .. absolute barsteward of a job!!! Won't be doing another one without dropping the whole subframe to the floor that's for sure. Before;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01008.jpg)

After;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01022.jpg)

Also shot blasted another pair of mk4 rear calipers so I can paint them red to match the fronts. They came up nicely, but unfortunately on one side the seals were knackered (hadn't noticed before) so going to strip them bare and prob get them powder coated for longevity. Before;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01000.jpg)

After;

You leave your car for one night in a vaguely public place and this happens :( Not happy, but it is only a daily and hopefully it'll polish out - going to have a go at it on Saturday.

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01008-1.jpg)

On a brighter note, the wheels look ok, although a little shiney for the dented, scratched and unwashed apperance of the Jetta at the moment :grin:

Been giving it a bit of a thrashing with days out to Castle Combe, Teesside Autodrome and Blyton Park since the last update :)

This was from Teesside;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/ApexTrackdays-Teesside-June2011-0005.jpg)

Not actually done much to the car recently. The scratch polished out so was pleased about that and I have fitted the rest of the interior too. The only problem with the interior is that the passenger front seat sits very high for some reason. I don't know if this is because the seats are from a pre 90spec car or whether they are just like that, but I'm thinking of getting a drivers side base with the height adjustment and swapping the material over (if this is possible, not actually looked into it yet) so that passengers don't spend all their time banging their head on the headlining  :grin:

I will be putting the G60 engine together over the next couple of weeks and hopefully it will be fitted in time for a day out at Castle Combe on the 2nd August. If anyone else is interested in that then have a look on Apex's website for details and also for other venues and dates - I'll be at Donnington on the 8th July for the day too, would be good to see some other Vw's there  ;)

once you've done the polish.. get some UV sealant on there like jetseal 109

Good work !
You're not far from me, do you do bodywork as a hobby ?
I have a few small issues but would never tackle a welder or spray gun, i could help you with detailing / products in exchange if you wanted to do some kind of like for like labour exchange ?
I always remember being sent as a 19 yr old to Sheffield to collect two cars with the other valeter who happened to be my ex-school friend so we were out for a laugh as you are at that age, we picked up a Golf Gti and a Jetta Gti both 8valvers in tornado, i had mine off the 120mph speedo in the outside lane as he flashed me out of the way and then cruised past me with 135 mph showing on his 140 speedo , we had to pull over & swap cars half way home and that Jetta was defo faster than that Golf on the day, an old pipesmoker ended up buying the Jetta to tow his caravan around so it was perhaps it's last proper workout !

Yep bodywork is a (reluctant) hobby, I much prefer mechanical work.

Done a little bit today, note to self... must do more!!

Decided to strip the old paint off the charger casing, the silver paint G-werks put on it a couple of years ago has not stood the test of time well :rolleyes:

Cheers

Unfortunately a couple of days ago someone caught the corner of my bumper in a car park and ripped skin off the iron :( Fortunately she stopped and owned up and we have agreed repairs outside of insurance so soon to be properly sorted. Put the bumper off my other Jetta on for the time being as it's Mot day today ... picking it up at 2.

I also took the clocks out to replace the highbeam light that had stopped working, so thought I'd have a play with the colour filters and also flipped the filter on the lcd screen so the numbers light up in the colour whilst the background is black. Looks pretty good :) though the red plastic I used is actually a little pink so might redo it later.

Yeah, wishbones are polybushed, as is arb (not droplinks though, need to sort that) and got some powerflex rear beam bushes on it too, but nothing else. Hopefully it will be pretty stiff upfront :)

Nice. Is that a vibratech g/box mount I spy? Looks like a neat job on the battery tray :cool:
I've poly bushed the ARB, R32 whishbone bushes and new G60 and 1.3 engine mounts.

Good luck getting the engine in, it'll be a massive psychological boost to just get it bolted in.
Then skip around the workshop when it fires first time and idles perfectly :smiley:

Still a long way from start up, but engine is in :grin:

Sorry mate, only got a 20mm one for sale.

So, problem was that the flywheel was too close to pressure plate rendering the clutch inoperable. Had the clutch ground to resolve the problem and on the bright side it has removed all the hot spots :)

Bolted to the engine;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01231.jpg)

Got the gearbox all bolted in then set about sorting the boost hoses from the charger :)

Might actually get it on the road sometime soon  :shocked: My time in the last week or so has been spent preparing for assessment days and interviews - I'm gonna need a decent job to insure this Jetta   :laugh:

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC01208.jpg)

Jobs to do;

-Fit o/s caliper and bleed the brakes.
-Clean and fit throttle body.
-Fit radiator and adjust right hand side bracket (had to move the radiator one hole (on the crossmember) to the left due to intercooler so doesn't line up).
-Fit intercooler and make two brackets to mount it to the radiator.
-Fit intercooler pipework to throttle body.
-Put some oil in it, prime it.
-See if it starts  :shocked: :D

Cheers bud :)

Shockingly, a small update. Getting a bit ridiculous really, should've finished this weeks ago!

A previous owner had a stainless exhaust system fitted and they bolted it through the boot floor for some reason, result --> ripped a hole in it a little while ago, so welded that up;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0006.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0008.jpg)

Also decided to port out the throttle body a little to improve the flow by a miniscule amount :tongue:

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0012.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0014.jpg)

Pretty close now though

Yeah that engine bay you could eat your dinner off. Hats off. Don't over polish the TB as it'll hamper fuel atomisation, need to retain a 'honed' surface, helps to keep the fuel in suspension.
Title: Re: Mk2 Jetta Gti - G60 Conversion in progress :)
Post by: Simeon on 16 November 2011, 11:00
So, fitted the throttle body last night, primed the oil pump, put the distributor in and turned the key ..... spins over nicely, but doesn't even try and fire :( off on holiday for a few days so will have to do some investigating when I get back.

Preliminary findings, before disconnecting battery and packing for holiday, were that fuel pump primes, but car doesn't stink of fuel out the exhaust after cranking so reckon the problem is at the fuel rail. Also, the ISV makes a lot of noise, not just the humming they are meant to make. Put a spare one on it and this hums nicely, but makes a loud clicking every few seconds. Two knackered isv's or dodgy wiring? hmmmm

Cheers bud, unfortunately no one seems to be able to figure it out. Think I'm gonna get hold of another G60 loom and see if it'll start then, but I've bought a mk3 abf so busy doing a few jobs on that, hopefully get back to the Jetta after Christmas.

Welded wishbones are meant to stiffen up the front end some more, though most people only stich weld them. I'm yet to experience them of course :(

Nah, it's just a bog standard mk3 that I'm using over winter, all I've done is give it a clean and service so not interesting enough for a build thread.

My wording was crap re welding the wishbones, it stiffens up the wishbones to reduce flex with potential handling benefits .. is it worth it? dunno, most people say they don't notice the difference and for a daily it removes the sacrificial nature of the wishbones were you to bump a kerb or something. I'm planning on getting the jetta on a track and I have a welder hence why I did it :)

My wording was crap re welding the wishbones, it stiffens up the wishbones to reduce flex with potential handling benefits .. is it worth it? dunno,

When I stitched the control arms on my Syncro and bushed them with TT bushes it made a BIG difference to the handling of the car.  It takes a lot of slack out of the steering and makes it way more 'pointy'.

Cracking job on this so far, although I'd be concerned about what the 020 box will say to the torque from the G60.

I'm also concerned about the heat disipation effect of painting virtually all of the engine and gearbox, too.

Have to see if it gets the ar$e with you when you get it running, I guess!

Post by: Simeon on 15 December 2011, 00:47
Cheers for the comments :) Sam, nice to hear someone thinks this conversion is being done quickly, feels like I've been doing it all my life now  :laugh:

DH; That's good to know about the wishbones, looking forward to driving it even more now. The 020 'box has taken stick from that very engine in another car so has held up quite well, but time will tell. As for heat dissipation, you've probably got a fair point and got to admit it never really crossed my mind. However, all the paint will probably fall off after a few weeks of running anyway :grin:

A, seemingly monthly, update :tongue:

Brakes are giving me trouble, can't get a pedal, just goes to the floor :(

Decided to make the brackets for the intercooler;

It fits nicely on the cross-member on the n/s;

Had to make a bracket for the o/s;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0105.jpg)

Bracket to attach the intercooler to the radiator, just need to weld the two pieces together;

Bit of an update, took Friday off work and got a bit done;

First up, set about getting the cam out;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0123.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0125.jpg)

Piper 285 in (obviously you can see the difference :laugh: )

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0126.jpg)

Modified the slam panel to fit around the intercooler;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0129.jpg)

Bracket welded, painted and fitted;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0132.jpg)

Had to move the radiator over so no longer lines up with the slam panel;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0131.jpg)

Sorted;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0135.jpg)

Refurbed the starter motor;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0134.jpg)

Random shots;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0133.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0128.jpg)

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0137.jpg)

Also fitted the bumper, then turned the key :D

.............

Nothing :( not even a splutter, so gave up for the day.

Ultimate Dubs spured me on a bit, stripped the loom back and found a slight issue...

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/DSC_0145.jpg)

Fired up first turn of the key after sorting that :D

Only problem now is that I have an unwrapped loom draped over my engine :rolleyes: will get that sorted and see how it drives, surprisingly idled rather nicely this evening :)

Cheers guys, plenty to be getting on with over time, but just wanting to get driving it now :grin:

Been redoing the brakes this evening as still not happy with them and also seen a tornado red genuine front bumper for sale fairly locally so think I'll get that to save painting the non-gen one I just bought (bugger :( ). Vid below, apologies for poor sound, phone..

edit; sorry, don't know how to link vid so it plays without going to photobucket..

Yeah, I'd forgotten how loud it is :laugh: Not exactly going to be a relaxing cruising car, but it'll be a lot of fun :grin:

Put the interior back together last night and hoovered it out, amazing how much dirt/crap gets into a car when it's just sat in a garage. Just need to make the loom for my gauges and put them in along with stereo etc to finish it off inside.

Hopefully picking up the bumper tomorrow evening, then will put the arch liners, arches and bumper on on Friday. Then it's pretty much done, other than getting the exhaust modified as it's a golf one so doesn't quite reach the back bumper :laugh:

It's taxed, insured and had its first proper run out today :) It pulls really well, although it is pretty noisy :laugh: There was a lot of vibration in the cabin, which I think was partly due to the poly gearbox mount, so I pulled it out this evening and replaced it with a standard one. Also collected my new bumper yesterday, so it's finally back to being all red!

Cheers for the comments :)

Bit of an update; Having sat in the workshop for about 7months it was filthy and wanted to take it to the Elsecar Megameet on Easter Monday, so gave it a good clean over the bank holiday weekend. Makes such a difference having a clean car, so much nicer to drive I always think  :cool:

Also made up a bit of a loom for my duostyling gauges, didn't want to just chock block them in there so bought proper connectors - came out pretty well and makes it easy to remove them if I ever need to.

Got the car indoors at Elsecar which was nice, doesn't meet 'show car' quality, but it was nice to be able to show it off a bit before it gets abused as a daily driver. Speaking of which, got stuck in traffic on the way home last night and was amused to see my mfa reading 17mpg  :laugh: If you don't laugh you'd cry...

Bit of a squeeking from around the pulleys which had been annoying me, so bought some new idler pulleys to see if that sorted it. Made a slight improvement, but something is still a bit noisy which is annoying. Planning on leaving it be until it gets bad enough to properly identify what it is ... or it might just go away as these things sometimes do.

Took a few pics along the way;

How grubby it was;

Like!

is that AFR gauge the one that piggybacks a signal from the stock O2 sensor? Dunno if they're different now, but a couple of years ago they played havoc with the sensor resistance and led to lots of fuelling issues.

It's a load of rubbish I know (standard MFA readings), but I think I've been getting low 30s out of it so very happy with that :)

It's good fun out on the track, but I think I might buy a cheap 3door golf and rag that round instead.

Update :) Car is running pretty well at the moment, though had to change the brakes all round as rear bearings were grumbling and I was getting some horrible vibrations through the steering wheel when braking from speed. Also gave it an oil change. Fuel economy is terrible (as expected), but it's good fun to drive and surprises quite a few cars. Had a 40mph 3rd gear rolling sprint with my mate in his Leon 20vt few weeks ago and he was very upset that I virtually left him for dead :laugh:

Had a minor breakdown on Friday too, one of the boost pipes came disconnected whilst on the motorway, but managed to get it a few miles to the services and luckily there was an rac van there sorting someone else so I was able to borrow a 7mm socket and reconnect it all :)

Oh, fitted recaro front seats too, but not got any pics.

Some new parts (ok, the front brakes are second hand, but were cheap);

Shockingly, an update  :tongue:

Its been a bit unloved over the winter, engine bay is looking worse for wear to be honest (looking back at the time spent on it makes you realise why people trailer their show cars around!). Particularly irritating was the sticky rear calipers (couldn't use the handbrake) and squeeking front brakes. Decided to take it off the road for a couple of weeks while I did a few jobs, namely rebuilding the 'charger, fitting new intercooler and radiator, rebuilding rear calipers and replacing front brakes...

Now, the rear calipers were 'problem free' Mk4 items, but I had some Mk3 ones that were in ok condition, so stripped them down, got some new seals of Biggred, painted them up and put them on with some new pads;

Old;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0282.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/howardlinn/media/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0282.jpg.html)

New;

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0622_zpsff0da738.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/howardlinn/media/Jetta%20Gti/DSC_0622_zpsff0da738.jpg.html)

I'm running S2 twin pot (Girling G60) calipers, which when used with 280mm discs results in the pads sweeping close to the hub and creating a lip on the pads. After having a look at what others had done to solve this I ordered some *cough* vauxhall *cough* 280mm discs. These are vented differently so have a 'full face' as it were, eliminating the uneven wear. They are also 25mm thick (same as stock S2) as opposed to 22mm, but do require the centre bore opening up a little (5quid at local engineering shop). Bought some new Pagid pads too.

As usual, a quick job became anything but .. on both sides the 40mm piston was leaking fluid into the dust boot, so ordered new inner seals and pistons off biggred (good service and helpful on the phone, highly recommended). Anyway, got there in the end;

 :grin: :cool:

Drove it about 20 miles and it broke down  :angry: Alternator had packed up so battery died :rolleyes: Luckily I had another alternator in the garage, so got dad to bring me a battery and soon had it back up and running :)

340 miles into the run-in, can't wait to boot it..

Almost forgot, I also sourced a genuine Jetta 16v gti back box, which I've coupled to a mid-box, front box delete and decat :) 2.25" system now and much more plesant to drive, but it does seem to resonate a bit.. going to wrap the decat and front box straight through pipe at some point and see if that improves things.

Awesome! What did you get?

2 and a half months later.. :laugh: ..I've had tyres fitted and will be giving it a bath this weekend and fitting them so will get some pics up. Nothing particularly exciting I'm afraid, but should look pretty decent.

Got MOT next week too, so will get a few pics of work being done. Needs a ball joint and rear calipers (AGAIN!! GRRRR) as handbrake is sticking on.

Ordered a new windscreen seal as want a new screen in it, but looking at the wiper blank it's probably going to need some welding too, which means dash out and paint ... all getting a bit expensive :(

On the bright side, it's running really well still and do love it. Nearly replaced it with a Fabia VRS last month, but couldn't quite bring myself to do it (not to mention the fact that I've sunk in quite a bit more money than I'll get back).

Soooo, started with the ball joint, old vs newish (it was pretty knacked)

Wheels on and moved outside for a bath;

This is what happens to Tornado red if you don't look after it :o I've not really polished it for about 6months

Not really got many pics, but went over it with paint cleaner, then cut back lightly, then polished with 'black hole' and (partially) sealed with jetseal 109.

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/howardlinn/Jetta%20Gti/IMG_20130803_171112_zpsf6513dc4.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/howardlinn/media/Jetta%20Gti/IMG_20130803_171112_zpsf6513dc4.jpg.html)

Came out ok, but the paintwork (particularly the front end) isn't that great. Needs a proper correction by someone that knows what they're doing really, or a respray (which I cant afford)..

Failed the MOT :( emissions. The slightly rusty/knackered looking mid box in a previous pic is, er, knackered.. plus it was blowing in 3 places, ahem.. Soooo, hopefully sorting that lot will help me pass the emissions :)

First things first of course, sort out the grey plastic under the grill on the bonnet :tongue:

Pic of new polo 6n2 rear calipers. Have the whole hub assembly too, but not fitted yet as want to use up these discs. It's nice to have a handbrake again :)

New mid box;

Will get it all fitted tonight hopefully, re-mot is tomorrow at 4pm. Going to check timing, reset idle etc too, really need it to pass!

its looking good.. the tornado pink will be easily solved by using a detailer with a machine polisher that knows their stuff... watch out for burning through the paintwork on the edges panels as this is really easy to do on jettas  :wink:

Yeah, I need to get someone to have a go at it to get it looking spot on. So much nicer to drive a clean car!

Well, it got a clean sheet :D Full ticket, no advisories. The exhaust was causing lots of probs. Much nicer to drive now actually as the reverberation seems to have reduced considerably. Think I'm going to get hold of some heat wrap though and wrap the decat and straight through pipe.

Got a few jobs still to do, bought a panel to hold gauges that I need to fit in the centre console and then I can wire in my VDO gauges.

Desperately need to sort out my radio reception. Bought a DAB headunit, but I can't get it to work. Think I may put the ariel behind the C-pillar plastics and run a wire down the length of the car to see if I can get some reception. Would like to delete the ariel on the wing too.

Anyway, lots to do, very little time :laugh: usual story. It's still running spot on and that's the main thing :)

In regards of the DAB stereo,  have you not installed a separate specific DAB cable & aerial?

Yeah, I used the one that came with it, but loath to put it in the windscreen as suggested in the instructions, so its tucked behind the dash. Obviously its not getting a strong enough signal there.

Engine now sold. Not sure what to do with the car now, thinking of sticking an abf in it and flogging it, but also thinking about chucking in the 2litre G60 I've been building... can't help but think that would be more appropriate in a Corrado or something though. Can't afford a Corrado until I've sold the Jetta of course... hmmm.

Yeah I know, but it was all starting to look a little tired under the bonnet and it was annoying me so decided to just shift it along. Chap who bought it is building a G60 turbo, so I kept all the charger bits which is good.

Got my mates ABF to fix up now so not going to do anything with this for the time being.
Title: Re: Mk2 Jetta G60
Post by: Simeon on 25 March 2014, 11:50
Not really an update as not got round to doing anything much with this yet, but decided to keep it and put the 2.0l engine in :) Currently ironing out a few of the issues I had with the build and hope to have it built up ready to drop in around easter.

Sold my charger and bought another to rebuild, so will get on with that too.

Not gonna detail everything like last time as I now know it doesn't last and I'd rather be driving it than opening the bonnet to look at it  :tongue:

Glad you are sticking with the G60.

How did you get on with the charger build and what kit did you use?

What bottom end are you fitting? This thread has been very helpful. I won't be fitting a rallye intercooler now so keep the pics coming  :smiley:

If anyone is interested, this is now for sale (still engine-less)

Decided I could probably break it for £1500, so asking £1400, but plenty of flexibility if I remove parts
