mk2 8v rev counter/MFA failure
« on: 19 April 2003, 18:52 »
Hi guys,
Just bought the red 8v from Volkswizard, chuffed to bits with it and in extremely good nick.  Couple of probs though: the rev counter and MFA display have failed and both the coolant and oil level indicators will not go out.  All these happened at the same time.  This seems to be a common prob, any suggestions?

Plus it has a new exhaust system, VAG rear box and Ernst middle and front sections.  The middle section, despite being new, does appear to oscillate alot, intruding noise into the cabin under load and at idle.  How long will it take to quieten down, if at all?

Many thanks, George

Just to give more developments on this topic: we have traced the instrument failure to the circuit controlling them, it isn't a blown fuse or the battery, and it is most likely my fault for using the cig lighter to charge my phone on one occasion!  Prob best not to do that.  Taking it to an auto electrics specialist this avo to sort it, will let you all know the result.  Plus I am removing the ernst exhaust system and replacing it with standard VW parts.  Prob the best way to get that pure gti 8v noise, plus the parts have become cheaper apparently.
Regards, George.

Good luck, find it hard to believe charging your mobile phone would cause that.  :-/

The cause was a weak battery quite simply.  It had been noted as 'insecure' when i got the car, so not surprising really.  It may still have been charging the phone that sent it over the edge so to speak.  Fitted a new varta battery as a replacement.  Exhaust going on tommorow.

Standard exhaust system is so much better, really makes all the right noises and i can hear the engine at last!  Only ?70 plus fitting for front and middle section.  Stick with standard guys! :)
