I gotta drop a comment here bcoz my bro has a 205 gti, I own a mk2 driver and I want a mk3 vr6 Highline.

Right, well my bros 205 started off as a 1.6 gti and I totally agree about the jumpyness at low speeds, but once up to speed it was fine.  He has since replaced the 1.6 lump with a Mi16 (1.9 16v lump) this has revolutionised the car, its not jumpy at low speeds anymore and the performance is amazing, hes pissed over quite  a few cars that should not have even broken sweat (and also recorded a 14.9 sec quarter at Santa Pod 16-3-03) the car is an animal, its still pulling at 133mph hitting the limiter in 5th (the 1.6 gearbox and running gear is still installed) so basically im saying that the 205 should be given some respect as a out and out performance classic car (note hes spent less than ?2000 to achieve this performance :o)

However, as im a golf owner (and not a GTI owner admittedly, although im friends with those who are) i have to say that i find the golf less hard work to drive, its not got the temperement of the pug which just wants 2 go faster and faster, the golf is such a solid and smooth car, the build quality in my opinion is infinitely better, no rattling panels or loose parts when the tunes are up.  Also I feel theres a better sense of ownership with a golf people always flash at u (esp if u have a phat mk2 like me  :D) and theres always help available...

But I dont know, although I agree the mk3 has put on weight, u cant argue that a tuned vr6 with full leather and highline spec sitting low on chrome bbs's isnt a tempting idea  ;D, then again so is a 20v turbo mk2...

Sigh, such is life  :P

Cheers ive prob not helped

But there is also a mk3 going round with two VR6 turbo lumps in it, so it just goes to show if you are willing to put in the cash you can get what you like

You cant go wrong with a mk2 Golf, if it's looked after it will run forever. The Polo G40 is about the same size as the 205 only it's better made, a very underrated car in my opinion, but the G Lader supercharger needs regular servicing which can be expensive Jabbasport are specialists at G Lader rebuilds.

On the subject of the G40, I read a report once that also said it was under-rated.

Their conclusion was that because of the gearing, its 0-60 was not very good, and it would be had by a 16v Clio. However, its 0-100 was meant to be superb.

Justin
