Title: Brake squeal - Do I need a brake shim kit?

Hi guys,

First time poster.

So I have a slight brake squeal - Or what I think this is a brake squeal on my MK2 Golf. When I brake it stops, when I turn it occasionally gets worse. It's worst at low speed, I do not have the brake pad shim kit - I have a feeling this was the reason, so I'm looking into buying a set, however I have never fitted one!

I know that you take the calipers off and they secure them some how to the disc. I'm running 16V GTi brakes with hubs.

Hi, first timer responding to a first timer,

I have no recollection of there being shims on a MK2's brakes.  I have the wheel bearing housing off at the moment so I will double check later.  From memory they are fairly simple, floating caliper, two securing bolts, two pads and two retaining springs each side.

I've solved squealing problems in the past with copper grease on the pad back plates and silicone grease on the securing bolts.

Edit: No shims on my car.
