Charity Drive - 2011
« on: 05 August 2010, 01:57 »
Hey, I am David Hallowes and I am thinking about taking my little ol' mk2 GTI to the States for a Charity drive across the US states, and back. Covering over 7000 miles its going to be a long and eventful journey.

COAST2COAST4UNICEF

This is only a feeler thread, wondering what you guys think, and general information guide for me.

It wont just be me, I will be taking a friend of mine who can also drive.

Some questions I have to ask before I wander any further into the idea.

Transport -

I can easily get the car shipped to the States, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with shipping a car that they themselves need to drive/insure to the US and what services you found that were acceptable.

Do I need to fill in any waver forms or talk to any government regarding the transportation.

How much does it usually cost to ship? This isnt really an issue as hopefully the sponsorship money will lend to the expense.

Money -

Are there any banks which I could set up in the UK which would allow to have different currencies within the same bank account (Be it a "folder") or do I have to set up a US account with a US bank.

Test -

I know I need to take a test to show I can drive, but I don't know if I need to fill in any specific files and/or complete things beforehand.

Car -

My car has done over 187000 miles, but I am not sure that 2 days of driving (stints, of about 8 hours) would do the car any good. Have any experience with long trips and what are the normal breaking points?

Stickers -

I am hoping to get every sponsor (including individual donations) printed on the car, be it vinyl stickers. Big sponsors on the hood, the main charity printed on the sides and roof (UNICEF, or if you can think of any other worldwide (US/UK) charities) and individuals printed on the boot and back windows.

I probably will have a load of more questions once I think of all the other problems that may arise.

And before you ask, yes... I do have a passport.

Thanks for any info you can offer me, or any links.

good luck with it all, cant really offer any info because ive never done out like that, but the money used for petrol and shipping ect. is that going to be paid for by you? or are people going to be donating then you using that money to ship a car to the other side of the world and get there yourself, pay for the petrol, repaires and any insurence ect. with that money to drive the best part of 10k miles or how ever far you said it was and then using the money to get back to england before donating the remaining to the charitie?

Yea, main jist of the idea. Or atleast ask them to sponsor us where we get free rooms/ cheaper fuel etc..

Its easily do-able, even if some does come out of our pocket ( 1K ) and an awesome trip nonetheless.

personally ide be less inclined to do it if part of my donation was just paying you to drive around america.

maybe plan it so you know when your going to stop and were, ring up hotels in the area and see if you can get a free room from them, explain that its for charatie, see how much stuff you can get for free i.e suplies you might need,  then its only really the transport left to be paid for, and maybe go 50/50 on it or maybe some companie would be able to sponsor you to pay for your petrol or something like that.

just an idea, youve proberbly already thought about it but as i said ide prefer to donate a few quid to charatie and know its all going to charatie instead of paying for someone to drive across america.

good luck with it all tho and keep us posted on how it goes

Yea I know what you mean. I am trying to get the companies involved (hotel/fuel/transport) to sponsor the cost towards the final outcome of the charity, where only expense is covered, leaving other companies and other persons donations completely intact. I am planning on stopping at every capital of each State we pass through, and having a sort of meet where people can come along, and hand out flyers about the charity and/or the donation credentials.

Sounds like an adventure and a half.

Couple of things that occurred to me:

First, when you bring anything into a country, especially something as big and obvious as a car, customs will tax you on it's value. So you will need to bring paperwork to prove it's yours and that you will be taking back out of the country when you finish your trip. (We have to do this all the time at work with equipment taken out to various countries, but each time brought back to the UK.)
Also, they don't have yearly MOT's like we do, it's something that varies from state to state (from 1yr to 2yrs or not at all). But you will probably need to get your Mk2 tested once it's arrived in the USA.
Have you thought about picking up a banger in New York when you arrive and drive it to SF and sell it there when done? The Top Gear boys did it a while ago. It would certainly save you the hassle of importing and testing, and you might even make a little money for the cause when selling it.

Second, if you're only going for a couple of weeks, you can drive on a UK licence, but you will need an IDP, International Driving Permit for some parts of the USA (again it varies from State to State).
IDP Govt site

Third, you can probably find an insurance company in the USA that will insure an imported car with a driver on a UK licence, but probably only if you have a permanent address. This trip will probably count as something needing specialist insurance. My best bet would be to try calling your current UK insurance company see if they will cover it. If not, call a car insurance broker, they will have a better idea of companies specialising in foreign cover.

Don't forget you'll probably want some sort of breakdown cover, unless you or your co-driver are competant mechanics and will be carrying a complete set of Mk2 spares

You probably won't be able to set up a US bank account unless you go into a branch in person with proof of a US resident address. Some US banks to have an office in the UK, but you'd have to contact them to see if you could set an account up.
Why do you want a US bank account anyway? You can pay with a UK debit card almost anywhere in the USA.
If you want to use dollars, you could try using a top-up debit card, like FairFX. Its a Mastercard so you can use it anywhere that takes Mastercard, but it's not a credit card. You can get a US $ card and load it up with dollars with your own UK debit card (via website or phone). That way, you are not handing over your own card details every time you pay for something, and the only money going out of that card account will be related to your trip. And it won't go overdrawn either, you can only spend the amount you put on it.

Have you looked at other charity driving things?
One of my old Uni mates has been organising the Dumball Rally for the last few years. Buy a banger drive it across Europe, sell or scrap it and fly home. Take a look: http://www.dumball.org/

Good luck, hope that helps.

Anyone willing to be a passenger on the journey?

Or anyone had asked for car parts through a charitable event before? (IE tyres, Oil.. etcc....)
