Detailing Starter kit
« on: 17 September 2008, 13:11 »
So whats in your car cleaning arsenal?

Looking to get a few quality car cleaning products so I can get the old girl looking proper mint. Ive got a red mk2 gti and the bodywork is more or less mint, so want to get it gleaming, and all sealed in as much as possible.

So what should I use? And in what order? (without it totally destroying my wallet)

Thanks
Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

Mate - your best bet is to read the two stickies in here.  It really is a case of how big is your wallet, and how much spare time have you got..

No spare time, just get two buckets and a long lasting wax/sealant.

Loads of spare time, get on detailingworld.com

Meguiars Quik Clay
Meguairs Paint Renevator step 1
Poorboys Polish
Poorboys Natty Blue wax (for a dark car) alternative Collinite.

Depends how much you want to spend, bear in mind the above doesn't include applicators and cloths.

2 x bucket £6
1 x Eurow sheep/lambswool mitt £7
Bilt Hamber Autowash £9 (only 5ml required a time so will last ages)
2 x Eurow waffle weave drying towels £19 (you can get by with one but two is better)
Bilt Hamber Autoclay £10 (uses water rather than dedicated lube, and is a bigger bar so works out cheaper)
Polish (see below)
Collinite 476s with 2 applicators and 3 microfibre cloths (see Elite Car Care) £19
AG Bumper Care £6
AG Fast Glass £6
Assorted cheap microfibres £3

In terms of polish it will depend on the condition of your paintwork (i.e. whether it needs swirls, scratches taking out, etc.). I'm sure the guys on here will recommend plenty of good products.

That all comes to £85. Add another £10 - £15 for quality polish and you're well on your way. The problem is when you get bitten by the bug you'll start longing after new stuff, then it gets expensive...
