MK4 Golf GTi 2.0 8v
« on: 24 September 2010, 02:37 »
Hey guys,

Just registered on the site this evening to gain some knowledge etc. Anyway, I've just bought a Golf GTi 2.0 8v for £2000 (2001/X with 88k) in silver. The car is very tidy, bodywork in good condition and pretty tidy inside. I've been searching the threads on here for 15 minutes or so and the 2.0 8v seems to get slated pretty often? I'm feeling like I've made a pretty bad purchase. I knew it wasn't going to be lightning fast, but insurance companies would of raped me for the 1.8T version due to being 18. I'm coming from a 106 Quiksilver so will i be seeing an improvement in performance? What I wanted was a nice solid car, with slightly better performance than my old 106. Bearing in mind that the 106 had 75bhp and the Golf having 115bhp, surely I should see some improvement? I understand that the Golf is a much heavier car and so on.

Anyway, any feedback or comments would be great.

Rhys

The MK4 is a very solid car, the 2.0 8v is not the best engine TBH you would have been better off with the 1.8 20v N/A.

That said it is a very good all round cruiser and much better than a 106

Not the worst engine in the mk4 collection but certainly not the best.. start with a 2.0 8v and at a later date when you have more money you can move onto a 1.8t or something

I knew that the 2.0 8v wasn't the best engine but the 1.8T would have cost me £3k on insurance and that's a bit silly IMO. The 1.8 20v N/A seem to be slighty rarer? After looking at the figures on parkers, for the same insurance group the 1.8 20v pushed out 10bhp more and was a bit quicker to 60mph. I wasn't really looking at massive performance so this should be ok, stick a nice set of wheels on it and a set of coilovers and should look ok.

The 1.8 20v is the better engine to be honest.

Yeah, I most certainly understand that. Oh well, give it a couple months until the 2 yrs ncb comes through then i'll see what the insurers have to say.

I used to have a 2.0 GTi a while ago, It wasnt as bad as people make out, Not exactly the quickest car but was very solid & drove really well.

Get a set of nice wheels on it & go a bit lower then enjoy it
