Noticed that after the first winter, ongoing sh!tty weather the MKii overhall has held up pretty well!
havent had any leaks that i have noticed
but what has come to light is some rust! Now i knew there was some surface buble rust here and there but the weather is starting to win and the little patches are starting to get a little worse, the worst is the tailgate but thats goign anyway!
But in front of the pass rear ach by the trim there is some and it appears to getting worse :P another thing to sort sonner rather than later i think, not looking forward to finding out how much that is gunna cost!

Maybe have a go at attacking it yourself, even if it's just to stop it getting any worse? How bad is it, pics?

I got some I really need sorting. On the passenger wiper and behind the rear GTI badge, not brave enough to tackle it myself, but don't have the funds for a body shop :embarassed: :sad:

I'm no expert dude and cannot weld but during the rebuild of mine I had to tackle lots of blisters, scabs and the odd littel holes on replacement panels but what I did was enough to remove the rot that was there and smooth it back so it was back to normal... My issues were where you cannot see which meant they could be painted or waxoyled without having to look bling. However if left they would have quickly spread to areas that would be harder to make pretty at home.

Coat it with Hammerite Kurust immediately to prevent further rot.

cheers i get some when i get piad on friday and go round the car cover the little bits i find, as siad its not major but want to stop it gettign worse and leading to more rot and more work!

Theres quite a few, general jist is:
Grind away rust
Sand rust
Apply kurust
Fill with filler
Sand filler
Primer
Spray
Cut back
Polish
Wax.

POR 15 is very good - used to use on the underside of my old Beetles floor pan. Couple of pointers though:
- Follow the guides to the letter - POR15 is an ARSE for not sticking unless you do it correctly. Just flakes off otherwise.
- It doesn't keep. Once that tin is open it goes off quite quickly. You can cling film under the lid which helps though.
- Wear gloves - it takes weeks to come off of your hands (take my word for it on this one :grin:)
Rust bullet is also an alternative that is worth looking into. No experience with this though but have heard good things.

Get your arch trim off and have a good look to see how bad it is. If it's eaten quite a bit of the arch, then it may be worth welding on a new one.

ive got a few spots that need sorting... im putting off doing anything about it till summer, to give my crap painting a chance of sticking!

Yer ive read lots of rust resto projects on jap cars as they all suffer when they import them over.. and they also recommend por-15 very highly think i will go with that thanks :smiley:

I've got a rusted inner sill :sad: and two other bits that need welding on the dog!

From reading my history ive got advisories from last 2 years for 'corroded' inner and outer sills.. is this a mission of a job or could average joe do it ??

that strut top is an easy fix as they go but it dosent involve krust.
i would drill out the spot welds and remove the one pannel, then cut out all of the affected metal on the arch itself then replace with good metal from ether a reapir pannel or another shell, then clen up and reinstall the removed pannel. proably tig the lot now for neater welds so less work to do to make it look untouched

Woh..... could have been easier and way cheaper to fix when first advised. A lot can happen in 2 years, especially when it comes to rust and even worse in area's like that. :lipsrsealed:
Depends how bad it is.. usually this kind of corrosion requires welding, especially if left this long.

the other arch is on its way out now so gettin a new car instead as it will cost a fortune to hav done

^^^^ not necessarily.. You should get a quote at least. The right person could do it for a good price and cheaper than a new car... what would you do with this one if you got a new one?

If you have the gear and can weld then yeah i'd say so... not the hardest area to do.. depends how bad it is, get some pics up for peeps to see maybe, for a better idea?

Well it only done 1500 miles between mot's so hopefully not to bad. Will upload pics when I see the state if the corrosion.

my mate cud do it as he used to be a coachbuilder, but ive had the car for 4 yrs in march and want a new one now plus need a car with better mpg as altho it being a 1.3 struggles to get over 30mpg at times. i aint decided wat to do with it yet but the suspension will be replaced with the standard height suspension

It does look pretty hard to do, but been told by a few people it isnt that hard, just got to know how to weld, which only takes practice. You can buy the inner sill from here http://www.vwh2o.com/vw.cfm?act=page.render&pageID=756&lang=EN&country=GB&pageToLoad=2 then need an outersill.
I'm just scared of attacking my car with a grinder!

Seen quite a few syncro's with corrosion through the rear strut area.
Its cheaper to hand it to a bodyshop than to do it yourself I found.
Quality products are expensive. You can end up doubling your costs and time.

Not sure if thats an outer sill or inner sill ? Thats the link I was giving when asking someone on here about it.
