Title: FINISHED PICTURES UPLOADED!!!
Post by: golfmk31993 on 27 February 2008, 19:20
i bought some color coded bumpers from ebay ,I payed £45 delivered wich i thought was briliant considering i was quoted £250 to paint my non colour coded bumpers ,

i just recieved them today and they are quite badly scuffed and scratched

im some places they are badly scuffed/chipped and need filler i think, and in other places they are just scratched any could be reapaired with a can of touch up paint,

i am disapointed as i was told they were in perfect condition,

does anyone know wot the best way to repair them would be?,  how much would i be looking at paying to get them done profesionally at a scratch chip and dent reapir place?

heres some pics (click ont them to enlarge)

most of the scrathces im gunna do with a can of halfords touch up paint, but its the chips im worried about,

if i use halfords tuch up paint, can i just spary it directly over the scratched areas?? and will the colour match or is it gunna look bodged??

also wot should i use to sand, wich filler, and wich primer should i use to do the chipped areas??

thanks

get a multi pack of wet and dry, some p38 filler, grey primer and red top coat..
first sand the bumpers using medium wet dry and where you see deep chips use the p38 to make smooth, when dry sand the filler with rough wet dry and then go over the full bumper. when smooth and level prime the painted part and the use fine wet dry to smooth.. then reprime and paint...

if you have a haynes book have a look for body repair tips etc..they have some good info for first timers

ok sounds easy enough
so i can just sand down and filler the scuffed area's, i dont wanna do the whole bumper it seems pointless,
also will it be ok to use a spray can of halfords touch up paint??

as long as the paint isnt flakey you should be fine o rub and fill the painted area....and halfords/carplan etc paint will all be fine

is the black scuffed as thats a bit more difficult!

Post by: golfmk31993 on 27 February 2008, 20:17
the black is slightly scuffed but its not very bad, im not too bothered about that, its really just the painted parts of the bumpers i wanna sort,

the rear bumper has a tiny scratch wich i will just spray touch up paint straight onto apart from that its fine,
its just the front bumper has (as you can see in pics)  been scuffed on the corners of the painted part, and has a couple small chips,
i apreciate your help, im gunna spend saturday sanding , fillling , priming and painting , ill let you know how it goes.

does anyone know were i can find a how to on this topic, im sure there is one somewere on the internet but i just cant find it

thanks again

it is for painted bumpers, but you have to buy your colour matched paint from them as it doesnt come with it,

check this link to their website

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_201709_langId_-1_CarSelectorCatalogId__CarSelectorGroupId__varient__categoryId_31336_crumb_33958_parentcategoryrn_31336#

so you hink i should go fot it and try this kit??

Post by: golfmk31993 on 27 February 2008, 22:04
do you think that the damage to my bumpes is repairable?   some of the scuffs are quite deep, they have gone through the paint to the plastic underneath, i have just cleaned the front bumper and it does have a few roundish scrapes aswell as the scuffs on the corners near the indicators.

can halford colour match paint be used on the whole bumper, would i need to sand and prime the whole bumpers or could i just spray it onto the existing paint once i have repaired the scuffs and scraipes with sanding and fillering??

bumper will be repairable.... and paint the full bumper other wise the paint wont match...oh and sand and prime the whole lot too

Title: Re: just got my new bumpers, scratched, scuffed and chiped HELP & ADVICE NEEDED
Post by: boneybradley on 27 February 2008, 22:35
1 can should be ok for a bumper...and layers depends on how you paint it...but 4 or 5 good coats will give a smooth and even finish

is g40 made for plastic ?? is it the best filler for this kind of job, anyone rcomend anything else??? also wot exact type of primer should i use?? and should i use laquer???

i really wanna get this right and dont want to end up with some cheap crappy halfords do it urself kit that doesnt work

Title: Re: just got my new bumpers, scratched, scuffed and chiped HELP & ADVICE NEEDED
Post by: boneybradley on 28 February 2008, 21:24
I have used p40 and it was fine as they dont flex that much...unless you hit ecerything then proper bumper (flexi) filler like the halfords kit is best and most modern primer will work on plastics as its synthetic based. Just remember to paint the full bumper or it will look patchy!

and clean them with thinners, dewaxer etc for best results as you need to remove all the waxes, traffic film etc

it just seems pointless doing the whole bumper as alot of the paintwork is fine,i bought the bumpers because they matched the colour of my car  i figure if i make sure i do sections right up to an edge it would look ok

ok so im now thinkin about sanding and painting the whole bumper,

should i buy a sander/polisher from halfords like this one,

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_232675_langId_-1_CarSelectorCatalogId__CarSelectorGroupId__varient__categoryId_76862_crumb_33958_parentcategoryrn_76862

does anyone know if halfords power tools are any good, i figure its worth 19.99 as i can use it to polish my paintwork aswell

went to halfords today, i decided against the bumper scuff repair kit

, instead i got some plastic bumper filler, some wet and dry sand paper packs, tornado red can of spray paint, and red plastic primer, im going to get started on the bumpers tomorow morning,

the plan is to sand the deep scratches smooth, filler them , sand them smooth again, primer them, lightly sand the primer again and then paint in thin layers,

anyything ive missed or any helpfull tips i should know??

ive just sanded them with wet and dry, filered them, then sanded the filler with wet and dry, then cleaned them with terps wiped them down and primered them, so im waiting for the primer to dry

they lookin pretty good, like brand new bumpers, i decided to do the whole thing rather than bits so the paint wont look bodged, im just hoping that the paint will match the rest of the car ,its from halfords and its the same paint code as mine

just managed to take one picture and the battery on my camera went flat, il post some more up soon

jst use water,n sand the primer b4 u top coat it with wet n dry paper, keep it really wet n keep the paper clean all the time!!
n make sure every blemish, scratch n mark is fillerd n sanded, dont think "oh the top coat will cover it" cos it wont, itl show it up even more!
you probably noticed a couple more marks when you primered it,always show up!
its best to spend another hour or so puttin a bit more filler in n a quick blast of primer again rather than makin do wen uve got this far, otherwise the whole things bin a waste of time!lol!
lookin good thou!

Post by: vdub virgin on 02 March 2008, 20:17
oh and dont spray the top coat outside or anywhere cold or damp, itl dry cloudy.......not good!
Title: Re: LOOOOK I FIXED IT PICTURE UPLOADED!!!
Post by: golfmk31993 on 02 March 2008, 20:43
yer i did spend more time sanding it after i primered it, then i primered it again , it looks really smooth , theres a couple little blemishes inside were the grills go but they wont be seen because the grill will be in the way

im gunna leave it to dry overnite and then tomorow when i get home from work im gunna spray the top coat, thanks for our advice about the extra sanding before top coat, ill make sure i do that,

im working in the roof of my garage and i got a fan heater up there, so it warm and not damp or cold, gotta nice little spray shop on the go

ill post some pictures when im done,

oh yeah when im finished doing the top coat should i lightly sand it with wet and dry and then polish it with t cut??? (just somthing i read somewere)
or should i just leave it and polish with my autoglym polish??
Title: Re: LOOOOK I FIXED IT PICTURE UPLOADED!!!
Post by: vdub virgin on 02 March 2008, 20:55
dont touch it with sandpaper after topcoat! n when you sandin primer be realy careful nt to rub thru it,or ul b primerin again lol!
no after topcoat, dont touch it with any polish/wax etc 4 at least a week, especially in cold weather,it mite be touch dry but it wont properly harden for about a week,
theyll be alright to fix on,just dont touch it with any solvents ie soap an wax etc!lol!
n no t cut, thats only for faded paint! the advice ul hav read will hav been to use it to blend old paintwork into new on car panels, to hide the join if that makes sense!
oh and i wouldnt advise having the fan heater on while ur spraying or while its drying, itl be blowing dust around all over your nice wet paint! u gt an electric radiator u cn plug in maybe?
apart frm that............its easy!lol!

ok,

ill make sure i turn the fan heater off, i havnt got a radiator but its not too cold up there,

ill post some pics after im done tomorow

thanks again

got home from work today and started spraying, ,

it looks ok but the colour is currently inbetween the colour of the primer (dark red) and the colour of my car, i used one can of paint on the front bumper, i done three light coates and ran out of paint,
i am gunna get more paint and finish it and see wot its like.

at the moment im kinda thinkin wether too just buy another front bumper thats already painted,

if anyone can hook me up with one let me know

it seems i have a few imperfections from my fillering , i know i was worned :undecided:

ive only done a thin coat of paint so i just wanted to know if its too late to do abit more sanding before i carry on painting,

could i just sand the bodged bits abit more and then keep painting, or should i sand the whole thing again and primer it???

thanks
Title: Re: LOOOOK I FIXED IT PICTURE UPLOADED!!!
Post by: vdub virgin on 04 March 2008, 20:12
jst sand the messy bits, spray a bit of primer where uve sanded, then carry on painting!
dont mask the sanded bits off from the good bits, ull end up with lines when u take the tape off that ul have to sand again!
dont worry to much about overspraying primer onto the good bits,u cn soon blast over with topcoat again
its all trial and error dude! ul learn frm ur mistakes,
think how chuffed ul be wen u get em on

so a sanding block will make sanding easier????

im going to halfords tomorow to get paint so ill get a sanding block aswell,

im now also thinking about laquering it when im finished painting, the paint im using doesnt require laquer but ive been told it will make the paint look more shiny and it will last much longer and protect from chips
Title: Re: LOOOOK I FIXED IT PICTURE UPLOADED!!!
Post by: LazyLunatic on 04 March 2008, 21:55
from what ive heard and read, i strongly advise using laquer. you can pick up a 400ml can for like £2-3 from diy store. then just spray a few layers on, totally worth it really for the finish and protection it gives.

dont get plasti-kote. ive used there products before, whether it was just bad luck but the cans are crap and the spray mechanism breaks easy. I went to Chaplins, not sure if it is just in Plymouth, but its like a cheapy/crappy store that sells junk; however, they do have some high quality stuff if you look, just at an awesome price  I like that!

From the Halfords list though, get clear lacquer. Don't quite understand the difference between:
-Halfords Clear Lacquer 500ml
-Halfords Clear Lacquer Spray 300ml
Pics are same but not sure. Just make sure you buy it in a spray can, 300ml should be enough for two bumpers but you might want to get 500ml if possible. If someone can confirm the amount needed, as I can't say for sure.

Good Luck, I hope to do my bumpers soon, its such a pain sanding it down! Just done my grill and badges, look pretty smart. Will get pics up in my forum, in dubs section.

i just finished respraying the front bumper and it looks mint, im so glad i went back a sanded more because it looks like a new bumper,

the paint looks spot on , really shiny and it matches the rear bumper perfect, wich im suprised at.

im going to give it time to dry and then ill laquer it, i got a 500ml can of clear laquer from halfords.

how long should i wait before i laquer it?? and should i lightly rub down the paint before i laquer    it seems a shame to touch it with sand paper as its sooooo shiny and mint

wot do you think?

yea im guna get some more laquer and give them another coating, cos i think some bits are covered more than others,,,

ill let you know how it goes

i just used another 500ml tin of laquer on it,

to be honest i think laquer is more hastle than its worth,  to get it to be a nice shiny finish you have to put it on thick all over, but its so thin it just runs everywere,

if u just do thin coats on top of each other it goes cloudy and looks crap,

wish id just left it without laquer, wasnt as shiny but looked a nice smooth finish, now i just got runs all over the pace wich look sh!te.

im hoping once its dry properly i can use somthing like tcut to remove a layer of laquer, thus removing the runs

Leave it a week to cure properly, then rub it down flat with very fine wet and dry, then two thin coats in a warm environment. If its still not shiny leave it another week to cure and then go over it gently with T cut until you get a good shine.
You should only really lacquer paint thats meant to be laquered.
I hope you keyed the paint surface before you applied the lacquer otherwise it will peel off in no time.

Good luck

Cheers

Paul

i didnt touch the paintwork with anything except water before i applied laquer,

i just looked at it and it looks really good now its dried, really shiny and even.

so have i wasted my time then , will it just peel off straight away??

ok i just unmasked the bumper and it looks aewsome, all the spots that had slightly run have gone, and the whole bumper looks really shiny, i can see my face in it with great detail. i compared it next to my car and the colour match is unreal, it looks spot on, and everyone told me that red will never be a good match

im just hoping that the paint will last and not just flake off into a mess, but only time will tell

ive brought the bumper inside in the warmth to cure it properly, ill post pics of it tonight when my mum brings back my camera

maybe you didnt need the 2nd can of laquer after all  I beleive laquer goes cloudy when applied but dries shiny (similar to light tint spray). good work tho fella, cant wait to see the finished product, you inspired me to get mine done now

I'm planning on completely smoothing a front bumper and doing what you've done.. your results do look damn cool! have you compared the bumper to the car itself yet paint wise? i take it you'd need to t-cut it or something to match the colours perfectly?

if the front was smoothed where can you legally put the front number plate, can it go inside car or does it have to be fixed onto front..?

I'd put the number plate down near the bottom right corner of bumper 'spoiler'.. i'd make a bracket of sorts and fix it nicely down there.. + as i'd plan on smoothing over the fogs/indicators/towing covers i'd get headlamps with indicators built into them, like the mk4's
