Simon's MK2 GTI 8v strip down
« on: 02 April 2013, 18:29 »
So I bought this a few years ago, the plan was a full strip down and replace all that it needs with the hope it stays in the family for a good while.  Was just doing wee bits to it now and again but I've lost the drive to finish the mk4 with the whole Bagyard crap so have started to work more on the MK2 these last few weeks. I was going to stick with the 8v but have a feeling when removed tomorrow it won't be back in.

Got a bit of a list together of things to do. I'm no mechanic and going to be learning along the way so it might take a while.

Suspension steering and drivetrain

Coilovers.... got then sold to found the mk4 lol
Remove rear beam and front wish bones and powered coat.
New top mounts, and bushings all round.
Mk4 rears brakes and G60 fronts.

Body
Back to standard bumpers and arches.
Back to 4 light grille.
16v rear lights.
Respray
Remove the under seal and fix all rust
Re-seal

Interior
Full re-trim
Different seats

Engine and Exhaust
Weber twin 45 Carburettors.
4 branch and system
Different engine 16v ABF or TFSI?

On to some pictures because lets face it who really reads the words till they see a picture they like

The morning I got it.

Then a few weeks later, and how it sat for a while.

Started to gather up some bits.

Picked up a few other bits but have no pictures.

So on the some real dubbing pictures.

Pulled the rear bumper to find only one wee bit of rust.

After a bit of a fight the rear beam was out. Think the bushes had seen better days.

Engine bay strip down.

Bits removed

Sorry about some of the pics being crap.

Removed the bonnet and pulled a wing today to get a look behind, think the wing might be a goner and found some rot aswell.

Yea I thought that as well. More than happy with the job it done.

Got the engine out yesterday in just over an hour and striped it a bit. Some of the bolts put up a real fight but got there in the end.
