guys i used to have 2 gti turbo golfs nothing special compared to my 330 bhp GT4 but some factual information on the v5 might have been good!!!!!!!!!!!!
The facts are it is a poor engine, drinks fuel and the 1.8t is the better choice.
Poor engine? What makes you think it has a poor engine. What data have you got for us to back that sweeping statement up?
Early ones suffered piston problems, they use oil plus if it was that good why did VW give up a few years and stop using it.
The 170bhp is ok but would not be my choice.
All engines use oil. So the early ones had a few issues, the later ones don't.
So really, you can't back up what you said.
You say if they were that good, why did VW stop using that engine? Silly thing to say, there's many engines that they don't use anymore, doesn't mean they were no good. It's called progress, to move onto a different engine.
There's engines that wouldn't be my choice, but doesn't mean they're not good.
The 150bhp was ok but had issues, they then switched to the 170 version which was better however with both you still looking at a engine that will need to have its timing chain checking or replacing @ around 100k which means engine out.
I say poor engine, maybe I worded it wrong, the main issue is if you have a v5 it is a struggle to get any more power out of it if you wanted to.
The turbo will give a lot more gains whilst a V5 just does not, a remap will only gain a couple of bhp.
Spend 10mins on review sites and see the problems people have had with the v5's, hence why I said the V5 is a ok choice but I still think the turbo is the better choice.
