N Reg, read some where you can tell by retaining clip on outside of caliper on 288's not present 280's. Anyone confirm this?

I posted this topic about a month ago and everybody said n reg 96 will have 288mm , but that is wrong i have a Feb 1996 registered 8v GTI with 280mm discs, and i have no ABS thingy under my back seat.
