Very interesting if it's true, makes sense to me..
With only a 10hp boost in power over the current model and no change in torque implemented for the next-generation Volkswagen Mark VI Golf GTI, fans of the hot-hatch would understandably be less than impressed with the new car’s numbers.
According to latest reports, however, VW won’t be neglecting its much admired Golf GTI. Sources in Germany familiar with the carmaker’s plans have revealed to Auto Motor and Sport that the GTI will be expanded into a small family of performance models, rather than remaining just a single car. Thus the model being shown next week at Paris will just be the entry level GTI, with much more potent offerings from VW set to follow soon afterwards.
For 2009, Golf GTI fans can expect to see a new sports diesel model, going under the GTD moniker. Essentially the GTD will be running on the same chassis as the GTI but will feature a fuel efficient 2.0L common-rail diesel with around 170hp and 350Nm, expected to be good for an 8.2 second sprint to 62mph - not lightning quick, but sure to be popular with those compromising between drivability and fuel efficiency. This model will also likely come with a six-speed manual as standard, with a DSG transmission as an option.
The next model up in the new GTI family will be the GTI 'Plus', which is expected to clash heads with the likes of BMW's 135i and Audi's S3. The car is expected to feature a 270hp output, Haldex AWD system and an uprated DSG transmission with seven-speeds.
Joining the new diesel and Plus models, will be a successor to the R32 due in 2010. As most manufacturers are doing these days, VW will likely downsize the R32’s V6 engine into a turbo five-cylinder variant, which is also expected to make its way into the Audi TT-RS and the Audi RS3 eventually. This twin-turbo five will be putting out around 350hp from its 2.5L of displacement.

Nice linky wob! Guess who's got a new wallpaper!!
Lovin that one with the MK1
-
Believe it when I see it...
7 Speed DSG has been designed for lower cc engines to get the most out of them and anything over 300bhp in a golf from factory I just cant see.
-
mixed reports as always and lots of speculation, wait and see is the answer here.
golf+ thats a crap name you may aswell be calling it the golf with few more horsies or sumit!
-
would be nice, but I really can't see them putting a 2.5TT into a golf.. maybe for a very limited edition run but not mass production.
-
Why does anybody ever read those aweful, shyte, full of crap yankie sites.
Anyone who seriously believes that a Golf "R42" will ever appear needs to wake up, and wipe away the ricicles and semi-skimmed from their sleepy eyes!
And as for the GTD - well that already exists - it is called the Golf GT Sport TDI, and oddly enough, it has 170PS and a DSG!
Finally, just for the record, and to clarify those tiny american minds, the R32 does NOT have a "V6" engine. It actually has a "VR6" engine, which is very different. They also sound very different too!
-
Having spent some time with VW last week the word is to hang on to your R32 as it's likely to be the last 6 cylinder Golf!
So I can only concur with Mr T_T!
-
2.5TT in a GTI with 4WD and 350bhp and I'd
cancel not bother ordering the GT-R.

New info from Autocar Mag: http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/235190/ (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/235190/)
Autocar has learned that Volkswagen is planning to launch three all-new performance VW Golf variants within the next three years.
A performance diesel Golf – dubbed the GTD - is scheduled for launch in the spring of 2009. It will use the VW Group’s latest twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre TDI engine, offering in excess of 200bhp and 260lb ft torque.
Find out all the details of the new Mk6 Golf GTi
VW bosses have wanted to deliver a diesel-engined GTI since the Mark 5 went on sale in 2003. The combination of stringent European CO2 laws, the current economic climate and the arrival of the latest twin-turbo TDI technology means that the VW Golf GTD is now a certainty.
VW is also looking at a Golf GTI ‘plus’ model. This harder-core version of the GTI will use a tuned version of the standard car’s 2.0-litre TSI engine to deliver up to 270bhp. It will also have a seven-speed DSG gearbox and a Haldex clutch providing non-permanent four-wheel-drive. This GTI ‘plus’ will replace the current-generation R32, although it also looks set to come close to entering the territory already occupied by sister company Audi’s S3.
The final new performance Golf is likely to be another ‘R’ variant, possibly the ‘R42’, which is pencilled in for a 2010 launch. This will use a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine that will be shared with the forthcoming Audi TT RS, giving the Golf around 350bhp along with competitive fuel economy and CO2 figures.
According to Volkswagen insiders the spate of new high performance Golfs has been brought about by an influx of Audi engineers into Volkswagen, and a move to bring about more component sharing between the two companies.
---
Have been waiting for news on the GTD, always thought that if they did make such a car that it would have the new rumoured Twin Turbo diesel unit. Although I am sure it will prbably have nearer 300 lbft.

....
^If you feel you can believe the motoring magazines :undecided:
-
350bhp model? I think we can keep dreaming :)

2.5TT in a GTI with 4WD and 350bhp and I'd cancel not bother ordering the GT-R.
But we all know that just won't happen!

snippage . . . .
the arrival of the latest twin-turbo TDI technology means that the VW Golf GTD is now a certainty.
So how the heck will they get a proper 60 or 90 degree V6 under the bonnet of a Golf???? They can't, they won't, and it is not going to happen. That is utterly typical of the crap from Autocar!
And where is this latest twin turbo TDI engine currently being used?
VW is also looking at a Golf GTI ‘plus’ model. This harder-core version of the GTI will use a tuned version of the standard car’s 2.0-litre TSI engine to deliver up to 270bhp. It will also have a seven-speed DSG gearbox and a Haldex clutch providing non-permanent four-wheel-drive. This GTI ‘plus’ will replace the current-generation R32, although it also looks set to come close to entering the territory already occupied by sister company Audi’s S3.
Again, don't think so. The seven speed DSG has some serious limitiations in torque, and was specifically designed for much lower outputs than our current GTI.
Bacon airlines . . . .
According to Volkswagen insiders the spate of new high performance Golfs has been brought about by an influx of Audi engineers into Volkswagen, and a move to bring about more component sharing between the two companies.
Now Autocar really are talking out their ar$es. Major components are already fully shared between all mainstream marques of Volkswagen group. That includes platforms (chassis or floorpans), engines, transmissions, subframes, suspension systems, braking systems, and even the Recaro seats and some switchgear. The only real differences are the actual styling of the body, the quality of interior plastics, and the "consumer" electronics (different ESP modules, different audio and navigation, and a different convenience module).

Have been waiting for news on the GTD, always thought that if they did make such a car that it would have the new rumoured Twin Turbo diesel unit. Although I am sure it will prbably have nearer 300 lbft.
A Golf will never have space for a twin turbo, so don't loose sleep over the never ending wait!

There has been rumours about the Twin Turbo diesel engine for a long time. It is due to be released in the Audi's first, as usual. Lots of information around the net on it. Merc's twin turbo 2.1 is due out shortly, Fiat have theirs already and I can't see Audi/VW being the only one's without a small capacity twin turbo unit.
-
He was talking about the TT petrol engine, there will be a TT TDI at some point - think its in the new passat is it not...??
-
So "R42" is just figment of someone's imagination? How rude and inconsiderate of him/her/them!
Wouldn't it be nice if R42 was actually made...

TT, and how about that?

Interesting - they must have altered the design for more powerful engine.
Just seen the S4 is getting a 3.0TFSI SC unit, although you should only buy the S-tronic version as its 224 on co2, the manual is 229 so hits the high tax band.
-
Judging by VW's past performance they promise much only to disapoint. Then when they do they raise our hope with a 'limited' edition only for it to be slightly less than promised and then the buggers only go and make more. Synical - me - na, just burned!
Don't wait with baited breath boys the R42 will end up being for girls!

Yeh maybe they put the W12 into production cus that would make sense in the currently climate ..

No he wasn't! What part of "twin turbo TDI", or "twin turbo diesel" did you miss?
And there maybe, at some point in the future, a twin turbo diesel. But it aint here yet. And if it does get developed and produced, it will probably only be for larger cars, with larger engine bays, such as the Passat, and longitudinal Audis such as the A4 and above.

Well, this is news to me. And based on Evos previous track record of failing to report factually (just like all motoring journos and mags) on "upcoming" cars - I'll reserve judgement until I see one in the flesh.
If it does materialise, then this will be a "third generation" DSG, because like I said in an earlier post, the current 2nd gen 7 speed DSG was specifically designed for much lower torque outputs. Furthermore, because this 7-sp DSG uses a dry clutch, rather than the wet clutch in the 6-sp DSG, launch control will never be enabled - so I can't see S3 owners not being able to use launch control. :smug:

That logic won't really stand up. Tick a few options boxes on ether auto or manual, and the extra weight, particularly from stuff like sunroofs, rear side airbags, or security glazing, will push it into another co2 bracket anyway! :smug:
The supercharged V6 does sound interesting though . . . .

Ha ha, no chance. I'm not a fan of the smaller Audis. For me it's an old school RS2 Avant or Maybe a current RS4.

Ha ha not normally but everyone was bashing the article on some of those sites but when I looked they all used similar wording which suggested they'd been ripped off a VW press release. I thought I'd ring the dealer and find out.
But yes it's a slow day today. I'm also going to the Dentist tomorrow to have 3 teeth pulled out and some other nasty stuff done to my Jaw so i'm trying to take my mind off it!
