Title: Edition 40 Clubsport Plaques
Post by: TurboTrev on 13 February 2020, 20:59
Does anyone (Lee evo1986?) know at what stage the Ed40 plaques were attached to the driver's doors and by whom?  Thanks.

Hi Trev
Believe they were applied by Volkswagen UK as owners in other countries did not have them. There was an owner from Holland and One from Sweden on this forum a few years ago.

Yes, UK are the only ones that got a plaque.  But given the cars came direct from Germany to the UK port, then straight to the dealer I was wondering when and where the plaque was attached to the door.  Maybe VWUK sent all the plaques to the factory in Germany and they applied them as they would know from the build sheet that the car was destined for the UK?  Just trying to find out definitively.

I was certain if anyone was going to know the answer, it was going to be you.

The factory must be the answer, surely?  Nothing else seem logically/logistically possible.  Maybe we'll never know, doesn't really matter now. I was just curious. :nerd:

Surely if you haven't got a clue then that must point to it being added in Germany during manufacture…. it makes perfect sense to me as the car is built to an individual customer spec anyway!

Besides do you think the Germans would allow a plaque to be applied out of square by someone in the UK???

No.... that's an unusual response from a salesman! They normally tell you only what you want to hear and don't worry if its true or not!!

I'm sure on one of Volkswizards you tube videos he says they were attached at the dealer when they arrived in the UK.

Wasn't that was the recent R32 vs ED30? Could be the same for ED30 and ED40 though.  :nerd:

I have no accurate insight, but every Ed40 plaque I have seen appears to be fitted in the exact same spot inside the drivers door.
If that was done at each dealer on arrival you might find some in a slightly different spot, which makes me assume it might be done at the factory?

For Porsche up to around 15 years ago the dealer used to stick a vin build sticker under the front bonnet/hood. They were all fitted by hand. some at slight angles, a little to one side etc....

The dealer couldn't have a template?

Ed25 loads not fitted correctly or at all.
Ed30 er yeah we can't remember how many we made.

Even if they had a template, do you have experience of UK dealers? 😀

mines still in the glove box ready to fit, apparently original owner requested it not to be fitted, god knows why! il stick it on one day, been looking to see if any have been fitted anywhere other than the drivers door.

Holy thread revival.

Does anyone know if these plaques can be ordered. Appreciate that they are numbered and not generic but I am looking at a car, don’t know the reason but it doesn’t have one. Keen to understand the route to ordering one. Would it be contacting the the original dealer quoting my chassis number or can any dealer order them?

Thanks

The original dealer should be able to help but check it’s not and Irish import, as the number plaque was not applied in the ROI.

Have you checked if the car is an import? There were quite a few Rhd Ed40 which came from Ireland later in the run, I don't think these had the numbered build plaque.

Thanks guys. Silly question and not checked but would it matter if the car was from Ireland? Would this potentially lower the car residual at all?

Thanks

Well, one issue can be insurance. You should really declare the car as an import as it is not a full Uk spec car. When the Irish Ed40 were on the market, most of them appraered to be fully loaded cars, maybe this is why they struggled to sell in a relatively small market?  The insurance issue down to spec can be a different alarm system, that is not the same as UK cars. I am sure I have seen a few Rhd Ed40 without the lower grill camera sensor which means it is unlikely to have the city crash facility. This was a great help in keeping insurance down on UK cars. (A fully specced car will probably have this, and ACC but it may not be down as standard equipment).  On that basis, insurance may be higher on an import?

When these cars are older the value will be determined by condition, history, and possibily rarity, whether we will be allowed to drive one is another matter.
Personally I wouldn't pay up for an Irish import now, they were sold cheaper on the nearly new secondhand market than equivalent UK registered cars and would still expect them to be a slightly harder sell today.

Just asking..... would a car brought over while we were technically still in the EU be classed an an 'import'?

I believe yes.

I would assume it would be down to the country in which the car was first registered, Read above, even in the EU not all countries have the same specification requiremnets, that seems to be down to marketing? Beyond the Euro 6 classification of an Ed40 across all European countries.

If a car was first registered in another country prior to coming to the UK, strictly speaking, there is a reasonably strong case that it is an imported car?

I bought a new 911 from Gernany in the past, I had to really fight to make sure it left the production line with full UK C16 specification, which meant it had the correct Thatcham category alarm to satisfy UK insurers. It was first registered in the UK and was not considered an imported car.
