Scratched windscreen
« on: 09 May 2018, 10:19 »
This is annoying the hell out of me

2 month old GTI, must have been a tiny stone or something caught in the wiper blade and has left a hairline scratch all across my windscreen. Just deep enough can feel it when running nail across scratch.

Now im guessing there is sod all you can do about it apart from replacing. But thought I would ask in case someone knows of a miracle fix?

If its not too deep, you can buff it out. Would need the proper gear (some sort of rotary buffer and glass paste). Autoglass or similar could fix it.

Hmm? I’d have a go with à Dremel and glass polish. And probably pay £75 for new screen.
No way could I live with a scratch as you described. Impossible to concentrate on anything else.
Get sorted ASAP my friend.

Would be a shame if you picked a chip which cracked and needed a new screen...🤔

Be careful if machine polishing glass. If not done right, you can potentially create a slight dip or hollow in the glass, a ‘fisheye’ effect which, if in your line of vision can cause distortion.

Perhaps if you are using a rotary and have left it on the glass for 2 hours in the same spot. This just is not going to happen with a DA polisher.

Sounds like its a job for an expert rather than DIY then.

I'm fairly sure the various windscreen companies offer this sort of fix for sub thirty quid...

Had a similar scratch appear on mine but as I had a chip as well got it replaced, in reality I was actually impressed with Autoglass for once who did not c@ck it up
