Golf mk7 / Re: VW Driver Mag - Project GTI winter tyres

Its just all of the additional hassle of getting them swapped over for what is most likely never an issue most years.

So most winters, the temperature doesn't go below +7 degrees C?

There is a editorial in the VW Driver Magazine article which discusses this. It says that, according to the MET office, for 5 months the UK average temperature is below 7C.

I still find it funny that people don't get winter tyres...

... perceived cost, lack of understanding and experience. Because people believe it is expensive. Because they don't understand all the winter driving advantages. Because they have little experience of snow and ice - especially in the southern half of the UK.

My wife has winter tyres. I know how good winter tyres are, yet I decided not to put winter tyres on my car. I regretted that decision yesterday. :embarrassed:

Golf mk7 / Re: VW performance Golf seats

Always annoyed me that VW didn't make more of an effort with the GTI/R seats tbh. In fact I think they were nicer in the MK5/6 with the integrated headrests - at least they looked a bit more special. Extending seat base / thigh support would be nice, loads of similar cars have it.

My biggest bugbear with them was that even at their lowest setting the seat still felt too high. And I'm a bit of a short arse so I can only imagine what its like for a 6+ footer.

Especially if you are built like me, 29-30" leg and 6'2" so really long body.

I'm the other way round with 34" leg. The best seats I've ever had were the Recaros in my RS Turbo with pull out squabs. In fact, I bought a pair of these seats a few years back to make office chairs from.

The main problem I have is not being able to fit in a car with a sunroof.

I made a pair of seats to use at home out of an Audi S8, connected them through a power converter so that they would recline. I used to keep falling asleep in it.

Not only do winter tyres provide the best grip in colder conditions, they last longer than summers do when it's colder. In the past, I've started the winter with newish summer tyres, only to find that they need replacing in the spring. I've got 4 winters use out of one set of winter tyres fitted on second hand OEM wheels. Whilst the summer wheels and tyres are sitting in the garage, they are not getting worn out either. It takes less than an hour to change the wheels over each time, so hardly any hassle at all.

Absolutely agree with all of above.
Especially the 7degree stuff where summer tyres basically go hard.

I've driven round many a 4wd in my fwd car with winters fitted.

Just a mile away from my house this is and the lanes down there were so bad I decided not to drive until it had cleared. On top of that I don't have winters so not worth the risk. I like the idea of winter tyres and probably should invest. Its just all of the additional hassle of getting them swapped over for what is most likely never an issue most years.

Golf mk7 / Re: GTI 7.5 Map Update....

Right,
I must be an idiot, because I cannot get the update to work.

I've used the Discovercare to build my SD card.
I've inserted it into slot 2 (Slot1 has original VW card).
Tried update and get an error saying no data found.

I've also switched cards around, VW card is then detected in slot 2 but still no update found.

Are you not supposed to used the VW card?

Made a start on preparing the power steering brackets:

They’re better looking now, need to get a picture of them built up ready to fit. Also ordered a new water pump, G60 thermostat which operates a lower temperatures, flange and an adjuster bolt for the PAS setup:

Came with a free water bottle. Nice! Something else arrived too…

The look alright, but I have messaged the refurbishment shop with some feedback as the finish isn’t that good to be honest, especially given the price paid for them. I’ve achieved better finishes with a rattle can in the workshop…

Next job is to sort out the brake lines up front, managed to source a 9-inch servo and 22.2mm master cylinder from a Corrado for a nice price so will re-condition that up and fit with the new copper brake lines to give ultimate confidence in the braking system. Also thinking of going for a wide track using Mk3 Golf 4-stud parts to keep the 4x100 stud pattern but increasing the track width by 20mm. Will use spacers behind the stub axles out back to achieve a similar widening.
