Black interior trim swap
« on: 26 September 2008, 10:21 »
Now your GTI probably came with the nasty wood trim around the radio and so on. This isn't like by many people and can be replaced with simple factory fit black that comes in lower spec cars.

This is how it looks as standard

You have three options here:
-sand original down and repaint
-buy brushed alu R32 trim from vwspeed.co.uk
-buy black trim and try to match side bits in.

The two lengths that run down the side are not available unless you buy the wole radio cage so you'll probably have to paint the original ones or find some from a car being broken.

There is a guide to removing all the pieces of trims in the 'How To' thread in the maintenance section.

the part numbers for the BLACK interior trim are as follows

V1JO 858 035 1Q A - CAP £5.94
V1JO 819 157 G1 QA - TRIM £3.77
V1JO 858 607 C1 QA - DASH TRIM £ 4.38
V1J2 857 351 C1 QA - ASHTRAY COVER £5.34

BEAR IN MIND IF YOU HAVE CLIMATE CONTROL YOU WILL NOT NEED THE AIRCON COVER BUT THE APPROPRIATE ONE FOR CLIMATRONIC

Total : £22.83 with VAT

Note this will still leave you with wood side bits unless you buy a whole new radio cage (about £50 I think)

In the end after opting for black dealer items I decided to paint the wood trim so it all matched:

Now all I need to do is replace gear knob.

I'll add the tips to spraying in here when I get a chance.

Lol it was ages ago mate. I just rubbed the wooden bits down with some fine wet and dry (600) let them to dry, primered a few layers , sanded again with 600 W+D then sprayed colour, then sanded again and then lacquer. Then re-fit!

Is the cup holder cap for the new style cup holder? I have just ordered these part numbers and forgot to find out if the cup holder you had was old or new? I have the new style! I'm hoping you do too.

That link will come in handy, but it dosnt cover the removal of the side trim pieces attached to the radio cage.

Does anyone have any tips to remove these? Im cautious as to not damage them as they will need to go back on after ive painted them!

Just slide them down and they should pop off.
