Title: The wife's opinion on my new GTI
Post by: Mutley75 on 10 March 2019, 20:43
Doesn't particularly like the colour.  Thinks the wheels are too big and the exhaust is too loud.  Doesn't like the tartan seats or the shiny gloss plastics on the dash, which she thinks look cheap and nasty.  Thinks the ride is too firm and the car is too fast.  Says it was too expensive and the running costs will be too high.  Other than that, she thinks it's ok, but preferred my A3.

Anyone else have an other half that just doesn't get the essence of a GTI?  Meanwhile, I am slated on her Instagram page for being indifferent about the colour and presentation of her soft furnishings.

My Mrs has pretty much disliked all my cars - however she quite likes the GTi (which is a massive compliment)- bonus

Trade her in!

My OH is generally quite supportive although if she really disliked something I wouldn't buy it since it's our money  Her favourite car was a 1993ish Audi 100 Avant as it was big and very comfortable. For some unknown reason she hates BMWs so I've never had one. She does like a GTI though so we're fine at the moment

She's just storing up some get out of jail free card next time she buys something utterly pointless - like a £500 handbag!

I haven't driven my Golf R for commuting for about a year now  I started driving her A1 1.6TDI when it didn't appreciate her congested 7 mile commute (DPF permanently on active regen). In my hands, with a 20 mile commute  It went from 38mpg to 65mpg when driven hard. Then we sold it and bought the Polo GTI+ last Aug and she's stayed with the R. She likes the unflappable power, but still prefers her A1. She'll have to rein in 1st gear acceleration when the R goes for Polo GTI+ number 2 in (probably) May - it's due to be built in a week's time and it does tramp when provoked.

a £500 handbag!

If my OH spent that on a bag I'd have her medication adjusted

You need a seriously impractical old sportscar without a roof or stupidly fast race car with harnesses and a fitted roll cage, that way the Golf is the sensible option! :)

To be honest, I think if I swapped the VW badge for four rings and it had leather seats instead of Jacara, she'd be fine with it!  #BadgeSnob   To be fair, she doesn't dislike it per se, she's just indifferent to cars and was being critical because of the amount of money I spent and because in her eyes, there was nowt wrong with the A3.  Which of course, there wasn't but I'd owned it for 3.5 years and it was time for a change

FWIW my wife hasn't liked any car I've owned.  There's always something....  The 2017 Trendline got closest to being acceptable, but even that was deemed "too Silver"!

Mine stamped her feet when I got my DSG Passat, saying she hated autos and would never drive it, (having never driven one.) After a few solo 'test drives' she came round to the correct way of thinking and now won't have a manual.

When I got rid of that and bought the far more sensible and practical Amarok, she said she wouldn't drive that either as it was too big. But again a couple of test drives later... In fact, it made her disklike her Golf for being too small that it got replaced with the Tiguan.

Well, if she likes soft furnishings, you could surprise her with the story of the Jacara plaid pattern? Gunhild Liljequist was the first woman in the design department of VW and took inspiration from her travels around Britain and William Morris through the art and crafts period.

For me, it begins and ends with colour. Nothing else seems to matter.....

On the day we purchased our GTI we also test drove a C Class Mercedes. I was certain she would of gone for the posh styling and fanciness of the C Class. But after driving them both, she said she preferred the GTI.  It was a shock to me, but I'm not going to question that

But then his wife would be saying that it was even more expensive!

Don’t you start! Fortunately she only goes in my car once or twice a month. She has her own and we use that at weekends for trips to shops or anywhere where the risk of a door ding is any greater than 5%.

Does any married couple actually like each other?

Does any married couple actually like each other?

Probably not. That’s why we have our cars for a bit if escapism spending hours detailing them at the weekend 😭😂

This is why the OH and I haven't married (or so I tell myself) - although I can report that being together for a smidge under 30 years even unmarried the odd disaggreement can occur. Occasionally. Every hour.

Mine loves my CS, I was pretty much banned from getting it in red (she said it looked a cheap red, which was annoying as I love it in red) but other than that I was given the green light. Which was a surprise as she hated my s4 and my s3.

My Golf R consigned the the wife Mini Cooper to being near permanently parked outside the house as she instantly loved it and made any excuse to drive it.

When realised that I was driving the Mini Cooper more than than the R in the day! It was sold, and wife now has an A1 Sline Black Edition STronic 185 BHP and a really nippy piece of fun, (would also say the perfect town and commute car), and I have my R back!

Audi or VW have been our only cars for last 10 years and the Audi cabin does have a little more of an added feel, but its not a chasm and the VW are always nice places to be - But in this family having some performance is the prime requirement and both our cars fulfill that remit very well.

Did she contribute to your car? (if you don't mind me asking)

I just can't ever imagine a world where I get told what I can and can't spend my money on, if I want a red car then I'll bloody well buy one!

...maybe that's why she left me

Anything for an easy life

Dangerous game buying something the wife doesn’t like. Could back fire if she ever wanted to do something crazy car wise.... like buy a Dacia

I'm a wife (and a bit of a car-nut), and I bought my own Mk7 GTi PP and I LOVE IT. Best car I've ever owned. So much so I've had it for over 5 years. And the husband is happily agreeable to borrowing it - too often sometimes! But probably because it's smaller and easier to park than his (big American thing). He agrees it's the best 'euro-pod' I've ever had.

It's either a car or an euphamism!

My 2016 lease GTI was the first car my wife has actually liked - so much so that she actually said that said she was sorry to see it go.
It was a basic spec (as it was a lease). I got it in red as the cheapest colour available (otherwise I'd have never ordered red).

In the end - we both loved the red colour and both loved driving the car.

I previously had an Audi A5 coupe Black Edition, with nappa leather, 18 speaker B&O sound system, etc, etc... She hated it and only ever drove it once.
She used to complain every time we were driving fast because she used to slide from side to side in the passenger seat...

So having spent the last 20 years tootling around in Toyota Yarises, she's now enjoying driving our new 2019 GTI Performance and loves it...
She even loves the "much increased" exhaust noise that the new GTI PP makes compared to our old 2016 GTI.

I set the speed warning to 80 - but she came back the other day and asked me to increase it because it was so annoying....

Its a funny old world...

Couldn't she do that herself? Jesus wept, and they still want to be treated as equal.
