Title: G60 VR6 Clutch Upgrade.
Post by: richw911 on 02 August 2008, 20:12
The 1.8T comes with a dualmass flywheel which is recommended to be replaced when you replace the clutch.

The standard set up is not ideal if you have engine mods - remap exhaust etc.

The popular alternative is to get rid of the dualmass flywheel (Which is very expensive to replace) and replace the clutch so it can handle more power.

Once replaced with the G60 flywheel you wont ever need to replace it again :afro:

The singlemass flywheel is from a Corrado G60 (Also slightly lighter than the standard dualmass.) and the clutch is from a Golf MK3 VR6.

Its a straight forward bolt on job - For 5 speed models.

*Note this set up Will NOT fit the newer 6 speed 1.8T's.*

http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/DualMassvsSolidFW.htm

Please Note:
This set up WILL make the clutch VERY light.

You will need:

Corrado G60 flywheel vw part no: 028105269bx

The flywheel is £88.38 + vat
There is also a £25 surcharge if you are not exchanging the flywheel (Which if doing this conversion you wont be!!)

*Edit*

Thanks to Ivor Mk4 Turbo - keith

Apparently, the G60 fly is the same as found in the Mk3 GTi 16v (ABF), so you can buy one from a scrappy for a tenner, then use it to exchange for a new one at VW (£80).  Then just buy the VR6 Sachs clutch for ~£100 - Job done!

OR ABF flywheel part number: 037 105 273 C

Golf MK3 VR6 3 in 1 Clutch kit - You can get one here: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g3clutch.php

I paid a bit extra because i wanted Sachs.

Sachs 3 in 1 kit - £119. Sachs Part no: 3000384001

Tho if you are not bothered about the make you can get one from eurocarparts or GSF a bit cheaper (Around £80 LUK are also a good clutch.)

The release bearing for the VR6 is the same as the 1.8T.

Bolts: You need shorter bolts for the flywheel vw part no:  N90206103 x 6

And for the clutch pressure plate bolts vw part no: N10101001 x 6
 £15.86 for all 12 bolts.

You can also buy this set up complete from Ebay, be careful though and use a tried and tested seller :afro:

Hmmm, my brother just got his clutch replaced at a cost of £499. Is that pretty expensive or is it me ? They did exactly as you mention changing the clutch for a VR6 item and got rid of the dualmass flywheel.

Thanks ;)

Here's a link to the VR6 clutch kit i found. couldnt find the sachs clutch kit anywhere else. tried the links in this threas, but they didnt work. Good advice btw :afro:

http://www.expresscarparts.co.uk/

you just need to click "catalogue" and then select VW golf vr6, etc, and click on "clutch parts"

then you have the clutch kit, which is second one down from the top. Sachs part no 3000384001.

Total price is around £105. it says estimated delivery of £7.95, so i guess that can go up or down. but i'm going to be ordering mine this week :)

Looking into this at the mo.  Just got this all priced up:

VW G60 flywheel (028105269bx), its now £114 + 30 surcharge.  I haven't got the exchange so I'll be hit with full wack.

VW Bolts:
6off N90206103 @ £2.43 each
6off N10101001 @ £0.40 each

Quoted £100 + vat for the Sachs VR6 clutch kit (3000384001) at local motor factors
Also quoted £160 fitting.

Jobs a goodun, just got to convince our lass to raid the savings again.....  gulp

Right, had it done.  Got a squeek now!  Furk it
Gets slightly louder with clutch depressed.  Up under car seems maybe from the metal gasket (between box and engine), could this be rubbing on the new flywheel?
Decided to give it a couple of days use use and see if it gets better.  It seems more noticable when cold....
Apart from that the clutch is lighter, but bite point etc feels so much better than before!  No vibration through clutch pedal, result!  Engine spins up/down more freely too.

Thought I'd post a bit of blurb about some stuff I've picked up along the way.....

Bolts 902 061 03 - Now £2.11 each
Screws 101 010 01 - Now £0.35 each

My total = £16.97 - remember VAT goes back to 17.5 in 2010 so it'll be a few pence more automatically.

Sachs Clutch £96.49 delivered from www.vwspares.co.uk

Flywheel - pain in the arse to find second hand - I was lucky and got one off ebay for 50 quid, the guy listed it as 1.8T flywheel - cus he broke that car - don't think he realised what he had ;)

Also on the flywheel note in case anybody is wondering when looking for a flywheel - the flywheel is all you need no other bits (other than clutch n bolts) - thanks to Wazzer for confirming.

Anybody looking for a rough labour time estimate - 5 and half hours - this from my local and highly respected VW independent.

I'm all done and installed now

£211 labour in the end - and that was after weeks of searching.  I'd definatley say be realistic about cost if you are unable to fit this yourself.

Mine has cost just short of £400 all in, in the end!

Clutch is lighter now - and its like a new car being able to utilise my 200 horses again ;)

Any1 in Northants area need your kit fitting try Kettering Motorist Centre!

Date 4/7/2010
Cost of parts from VW. with the VAT added already at 17.5%
Bolt N90206103 (x6) = £15.93
Screw N10101001 (x6) = £2.61
G60 flywheel 028105269BX = £120.65 +£35.25 surcharge
VR6 Cluck kit = £105.63. from www.vwspares.co.uk. Thats all in with postage and VAT.
TOTAL = £280.07

Also i have weighed the 2 cluchs and have found that the old dule mass system that came out the golf was lighter than the single mass which was a little saprise.
I got the old dule mass to weigh in at 14.6KG and the single mass to be 16KG.

Havent seen this before mate but a good find. Not to shore on the make mind you, but for a saveing of £98.20 i might well be worth it.
I havne seen a tred and tested meathod of this kit so you migh be the first but go for it and see how you find it.
Is you car standerd? As the cluch itself might only be good for 150bhp. maybe ask in shop and see what thay say :)

Yes completely standard, with no intentions of any power upgrades in the near future,  I'd like to find somebody who has tried, but if not by the time it comes to buying a may well go for it!

i thought about this kit, just remember that the lightened flywheel means u need to change gear quite quickly as the rev's of the engine drop quicker, i opted for the g60 flywheel as it means u can still drive the car comfortably and not have to rush a gear change.  the info i've just shared was gained from trawling through many threads on the subject and weighing up the options. my vr6 + G60 upgrade is happening on saturday, so i'll let u know how i get on :)

i have done alot of research it seems that if you use the g60 flywheel as stock and not lightened it will keep any knocking noises out.. and the combo is said to be 200% better than DMF kit..

anyone have a link to buy the G60 flywheel and vr6 clutch together?

It does make the clutch light but if that is the price to pay for never having to worry about the flywheel again,

Do some research first IMO.

Just my experience in this, i have now fitted a lightened G60 flywheel and standard vr6 clutch and i have no rattle.

My flywheel has been lightened by 3kg which is a fair bit. This was done by a friend on a lathe, who just ran a clock on it to make sure it was running true, then turned the back face down.

Im not saying that if you do the same, that yours wont, but i can state mine makes no funny noises whatsoever.

Id say go for it :afro:

cheers mick

Just got this setup fitted in my a3, all in all only cost me around £320 :) and i can say im very pleased with the setup, the clutch pedal feels just right and the car picks up hell of alot quicker!
I do have abit of a squeak when first starting the car and then its on and off when im out driving, will get louder, then next minute its quiet again.. hopefully this is something that will eventually go away?
Also at first the gear stick was slightly harder to get in 1st and 2nd.. i think the clutch may just need wearing in abit, but overall very chuffed  :D

If using this setup in a o2J bit lost here might be a easy question  , I know it's hyrdo clutch , what release bearing do you run ?

Also in a mk2 golf , use what
 -clutch master cylinder ?
-Pipe work to slave cylinder ?
- The original 02j slave cylinder ?

Any help would be great ,

Thanks !

You may be able to do it for cheaper if you buy Sachs clutch on its own, and then source your own G60 / ABF flywheel and bolts.

This however, is a pretty good price though  :afro:

okay mate cheers for the help :)

I literally just ordered this one yesterday hopefully have it fitted in a week or two, I looked at the link you posted but decided the VR6 clutch by Sachs might be better on a whole the kit looked better. Same seller too I think they sell loads of these kits and have good customer service.

Hi mates,

Sorry for being a Topic digger

I've been told that the single mass flywheel from 1.8 g60 is the same in Jetta and Passat...

True?

If I replace the clutch and flywheel and increase the power will this damage the driveshaft? I have been told by someone?
Title: Re: G60 VR6 Clutch Upgrade.
Post by: mcgee9t2 on 14 November 2013, 12:50
Increasing power will yes. Because there's going to be more torque force on them making them want to twist and snap. Not sure what driveshafts are rated at. I'd say around 350bhp and 300 ftlbs minimum. So should be fine.

Well that's fine as I will only be increasing to 250 or as close as I can reach ha ha. Thanks mate.

I saw this a while ago, it's a really good deal considering you're getting a decent clutch kit and brand new flywheel.

Hi, I ordered the Sachs 3 in 1 clutch kit using the part number that is written on this thread and it's the corrado clutch, is that correct? Is it the same? Will it fit a mk4 1.8t? AUM looking for about 250bhp..

Thanks
