I thought clay was mainly for shifting contaminants off the surface, not sure it'll restore shine much to faded paint work, thought that was more the cutting compounds etc that restored the finish.

I might have said it wrong its more like dull, lack lustre paint. I have polished and waxed but it needs more. Bearing in mind it is 25 yr old it has stood up quite well. Thinking of the meguairs clay bar, auto glym polish and simoniz carnuba wax ( the one in the gold tin) needing arms like popeye. What do you think.

Clay will probably help in your situation. Follow up with a machine polish and wax

Would it be wise to machine polish on older paint. I have toyed with the idea but a bit put of with damaging the paintwork tbh.

Shouldn't be a problem mate, as long as the paint is just faded then you should get great results with the proper gear, however if the paint is damaged or if you've got some laquer peel for example then just give these areas a miss or do what you can by hand.

If you could post a pic up the guys on here will be able to advise whats best. ;)

Assuming the clear coat hasn't come off, you will only get excellent results with a dual action polisher as a newbie

Looks decent mate! She looks like a prime candidate for a machine polish! 8)
