Not a direct USB connection, but from the factory cars had an Multi Media Interface that you could either plug a USB or Apple lead into.

This can be retro fitted to hang off the back of the headunit via a piggyback harness like this one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-Multimedia-Interface-Kit-MDI-5N0035342D-Media-in-USB-MMI-Control-ECU/132864382611?epid=1734682720&hash=item1eef559693:g:Y38AAOSwVRxb9o-V

If you are looking to buy an RNS510, bear in mind that they are getting on for 12-13 years old now. The tech is very slow, clunky and very out of date. There are much better aftermarket units that do so much more, much better, for less money. Some even look pretty close to OEM too.

Id have to agree with dubber36, fitted a RNS510 in a friends mk5 not so long ago because he wanted an original unit but as soon as it powered up the software was very slow, even the touch was delayed on it, Id go for aftermarket as dubber36 suggested, the newer Pioneer units come with good specs.

If you buy the very latest rns510 you can get with the SSD hard drives and update the software etc then they will be fine especially if people want to retain the OEM look.
