Title: common rail diesel timing?

Anyone give me a definitive answer please as Ive had several conflicting ones about this!
I am going to change the timing belt on a 2.0 CR diesel CGL engine. Does the fuel pump have to be timed in some way like old diesels did or, as I am told by some, it is simply a pump that supplies high pressure fuel to the rail & all timing is controlled by the ECU? And therefore make no difference where the belt goes.
The latter seems to make most sense but some people insist it has to be precisely timed.

So there is no timing as such on the common rail pump.

There is a hole for a timing pin but this is more to balance the pump to the engine.

The pump is timed to build pressure in time with injector opening.

If the pump isn't timed it will run fine but can cause the engine to be harsh.

Also these TDI engines can be fussy if the pump isn't pinned up and it's heavily remapped.

Pin the pump (6mm bolt, drill or pin) and loosen the 3 bolts, same as cam.
