Title: Newbie
Post by: Ben-e on 09 May 2003, 02:21
Hi, im Ben from coventry & am new on this forum.

I have a mk3 8v anniversary in mystic blue.

Just starting to do a few mods, have modified air box & air flow meter & put in a cat replacement pipe (supersprint). Wondering what  to go for next. If im going down the route of cam/head work/chip etc is it best to get it chipped last to make the most of the other mods? I dont want to get it chipped and then do something else only to find i need a re-chip.

Thanx in advance

Ben

hi ben,

is your engine an AGG? i presume you have read about mods i've done on my 8v? what else have you been thinking bout doing?

i recomend a complete exhaust system - thats where i felt i got the best gain. i'm gonna try some mods for intake soon then i'd like to take the head off for flowing and matching manifolds. i'd probably chip it last as you said.  standard cam has nice torque

so, was airbox and flow meter an improvement? ???

Yes it is an AGG
The main thing i noticed from the airbox & airflow meter woz the noise obviously  8) seems a bit more willing at top end now altho i have been raggin it about a bit more since i did those cos its more fun now its noisey! Definately noticed a difference with cat pipe & doin the airbox.
i did the cat pipe the day b4 the airbox so its difficult to tell how much difference the airbox made not being used 2 it with no cat yet.
Other engine mods im thinking of are exhaust system (dont want anything loud tho so i dont know wot 2 go for), cam, chip, manifold work and if i can manage to save a bit of money up then may eventually get onto some head work.
Do most the work maself cos i work at listers vw so that helps the cost a bit heh.
Feel free to give me any suggestions u may have as to mods i can do cos im short of ideas. Not sure wot i can do without messing up emissions to get it through an MOT.

i'm getting a bigger bore intake pipe from impossible performance (abd) next week.  :)

have thought about lightning the flywheel.

has anyone done much to fueling on mk3 8v? i tried a fse boost valve but didn't rate it and don't use it no more.

i think it's time to flow the head !

There isnt alot of point messing about with the fueling IMO because if u increase fuel pressure, the lamba probe will sense the mixture being too rich and back it off anyway. U will get a rich mixture for about a second when initially putting ur foot down until the lamba probe takes over. So unless u wanna run it richer for around 1 second which isnt particularly worth it i wouldnt bother.
I suppose it would be possible to have a remappable ecu to cater for the lambda probe but gettting it through the MOT would be a right b!tch unless u keep ur old one so u can swap it over when the time comes.

ok, good point.

standard fueling is probably ok for up to about 200bhp i guess?

i'd love to get up to about 170bhp !

thats what i'm aiming for. i posted a message asking who else had quick mk3 8 valvers but nout above my 140 !

i'm sure there's a few out there

Ben-e, you mention modifying the air flow meter ... what did u do?

Copied what concept did hehe.
Took out the mesh from it. Not sure it makes much difference but every little helps! There is a big circlip holding in the mesh, dead easy 2 take out. And put back in if u ever need to.

Took out the elbow bend, trumpet unit from the airbox to the driver side wing and used a flexie pipe to get the air from the front spoiler.  Also changed the (dirty) air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, soft and chewing gum like (with holes) sump breather pipe, a leaking engine side wall flange and a coollant change ...  what do the garages do in a service costing from ?160 - ?250?

Noticed the throttle feels nice and free and no more problems @ 2000 revs.

Have had the 8v gti @ 43mpg on a 25 mile journey ... now to see if this all makes a difference.

considering saying goodbye to motorbike and installing a supercharger and a six geared box ... or maybe I'm just dreaming.

Like the sound of the flexi pipe idea to the front spoiler.
I thought about this at the weekend. Nice to see someones tried it. No unforseen problems with this mod??

Not as yet, I only done this lat night so truth of testing will be found out during thurs night thru to the wkend (about 200 miles of driving). ?Haven't seal the flexi pipe jet @ the air box, small amounts of warm air will be getting in. ?

On the other side of the coin, if I do, I wander how many kinds of small furry 4 legged creatures will I scoope up and desposit into the air box.

Thats true, wouldnt want any small arachnids touring the inside of your motor. Thats made me think, wouldnt perhaps some sort of fine mesh put off the 4 legged stow aways. i guess vw new what they were doing when they put the elbow joint in!

Be interesting to hear your results come the weekend tho. good luck ;)

Ah, the elbow joint, that was to knock them out so that u could pick them out of the air box without getting bitten!.  But the prob is on the VW system - the extremely small inlet in front of the driver side front wheel.  There would need to be high powered suction to get anything larger than a starved catapillar up it!

What I might actually do is move the horn and place the flexi pipe @ the grille on the spoiler ... I'll have to think of something to get it to stay there.

Im going to inspect the area in question tonight. Have a good gander, see if i can come up with any solutions. Like the idea of lining it up with the front grill. Still suseptable to flyage there tho, but just small ones ;)
