Title: Nextbase 512g Dash Cam
Post by: Mike J on 07 November 2016, 08:51
In my Mk5 I had a Nextbase 512g up behind the rear view mirror, brilliant bit of kit btw.
When I collected my new Mk7 I asked the dealer if they would hard wire the camera in for me
Pause................oh, err, umm, "will get back to you".............
Yes, you all probably know the answer, a complete lack of one! (Damnably annoying isnt it )

So its down to me to do the job myself.
A problem or a challenge?

BUT wait, if I touch anything it would surely invalidate my warrantee......wouldn't it? (Do not allow ANY wriggle room if it means the other party being releived of any money).
Not touching any of the wiring at all is the only/correct thing to do.

So what is the sulution?
Free wiring it is the only option if I want the camera operational.
However the two power scources are the central ciggy lighter socket near my left elbow (Warum jnstall es dort) and the USB in the iPhone tray.
Next question; what is the output Watts and Amps of the USB socket in the iPhone tray???
Answer; 5W & 1.5-2Amps (nominal) same as the Nextbase 512   Now know all USB outlets are the same!
The supplied Nextbase cable is ciggy power plug to mini USB which is now usless and redundant!
Cable required is a normal USB to a Mini type BUSB which cost me £4 online.
I can fit it myself, have my camera full operational, and stay within the warrantee reguirments, and when the warentee expires I can have it hardwired by a qualified Auto Electrician.

Challenge accepted, problem solved.

Posted in detail to assist anyone else who has a similar challenge.

I seriously doubt hard wiring a dash cam will invalidate any warranty at all. As long as everything is put back correctly without breaking anything then you'd be fine.

What he really means is EPAC in the Parts Department, Elsa is factory workshop manual and won't have any information on UK accessories!

Just to add they can also supply a Nextbase hardware kit, which is a piggyback fuse holder so therefore not splicing into any wiring!

If you want to come to Kent I'll sort it for you, just done another Golf 7R for a mate.

Hey thanks for the offer.
Is Kent near Brighton as Im thinking of taking my good lady there for a bit of shopping.
Im not very good at the section between Norfolk and Hampshire as you might have gathered, been around quite a bit but not that bit.

Cheers, 👍

Apologies to bring this thread back to life.

I want to install my old dash cam to the GTI. What’s the best way to do this if I don’t want to hard wire? My older GTI (mk7, 2014) only has one USB in the cubby hole above the gear lever, and a cigarette socket next to the cupholders under the arm rest. These are the only two I have found anyways. I’m guessing the USB socket will power down when I turn the engine off and lock the doors? Will the cigarette socket do the same?

Thanks

I'm about to fit a dash cam in mine (2016)
I'm going to use one of the Piggy-back fuse adaptors, in the fuse box behind the glove box.
No need to cut or splice any wires its just a plug in.

Plenty on ebay for a couple of quid.
But you must make sure its wires the correct way round (not going through the original fuse)
Issue will be finding a fuse with a permanent live feed, from what i understand lots of feeds stay up for a while and then shut down a short while after the car has been locked.

Surely you would want the fuse to shut down after car has locked? Otherwise it will drain the battery?

Not if the dash cam has parking mode you don't.
