Gti_Jamo's Mint Mk2 88' Golf Gti - The Strip Down
« on: 05 September 2012, 18:55 »
Bought this about a month ago with the intention to restore it over the winter. Still undecided if I want to do it or not as I'm tight for cash. May look to sell it on as a project for someone.

Anyway yesterday I spend the afternoon assessing what it needs and its in pretty good nick for a 25 year old car that's done close to 200k. Used some G101 to clean things up.

Engine runs but is loosing coolant although not leaking and no water in the oil bud does run on 3 cylinders for a while on an initial start up so can only assume the head gasket needs replaced but at nearly 200k an overhaul will be required anyway.

Both front wings don't look genuine and the paintowork is really flat on them. I reckon they will need replaced by the looks of it.

Interior is not bad just needs a good clean up. The bottom half of the dash has been removed for some reason and is in the boot.

And that is all I have for now. As you can see its in pretty good condition underneath. I reckon the whole floor pan will clean up well revealing the nice atlas grey paint. Sills are solid, inner and outer rear arches are all solid. Some corrosion on the bulkhead behind the down pipe but had a poke about it and its not rotting through yet. the rest of the rust is simply superficial.

Overall its a good solid example of a Mk2 Gti and far too good to break as its had no welding or needs any. As far as I can see it needs some attention to the brakes. There were no pads in the OSR so I assume someone began to change them and given up. Maybe the piston was seized or the didn't have the correct wind back tool. Was leaking fluid from the calliper so I guess the piston has come out too far. I've just clamped off the flexi for now. Will probably need some suspension components - ball joints, drop links etc but it all looks pretty good. Exhaust is past it and needs replaced. Obviously something needs done with the engine to get it up to scratch. All the electrics work fine as does the cobra alarm and immobiliser, also has full closure central locking.

So now I have to decide what to so with it. Not sure how much its worth as it sits but wouldn't let it go for pennies as it has serious potential. May just roughly get it into a roadworthy condition and run it the way it is for now. Need to wait and see if I can sell one of my other cars anytime soon to raise some funds.

Anyway comments and opinions welcome.

shame about the wings and front panel but theres something about it that is saying 'i want to stay on the road'! it looks like its been sat up for a while by the engine and the mouldy bits of interior in the boot. those are just the cars i love to find!
i found my mk3 sitting out the back of a garage, had been there for 8 months unloved :-(
def worth saving, even if you just get it through an MOT.

Looks a good basis for a restoration project.... Seen a lot worse looks like most is cosmetic other than wings at that door...

Has been off the road for a year and a half but looking at the old mot's it appears in 2007 it only had 90k and the rest of the miles have been clocked up between then and the end of 2010 so someones been doing some serious driving in it. My plan with it will be pretty simple. Keep it more or less original with a bit of lows. probably respray the body and the engine bay. Also an engine rebuild. Its obviously been given some special treatment in terms of corrosion prevention. Will need to sell the mk3 though to fund it but plan on getting another. Looking swap my Leon Cupra for a vr6.

Been a couple of months now since I got this so I thought I better get it started. Towed it over to my dads to begin work.

Swapped some cars around and got it in the garage for the winter. Stripped most of the trim and removed the wings and fron panels....will need to source some wings as the current ones are not genuine and have holes as seen in previous images.

All the interior stripped out bar the dash.

Some other inside shots showing no rust at all.

Inside of rear wheel arches...

No rust here either....

Bit of a mess under the bonnet though...

Thats it for now still got to finish off the strip down. Going to take all the windows out too. I'm happy that it needs no welding whatsoever, but the body has a fair amount of dents so it will be alot of old skool panel beating. Its general condition of the body is the best 25 year old car I have ever come across. Plan to take most of the exterior down to bare metal and start again. Still undecided on what to do with the engine as it down on compression on cylinder number three. Might fit a 2.0l bottom end if its easy enough or maybe give it something a bit special but not sure yet as I have a strict budget that isn't great. Concours on a budget??  :bigthumbs:  Unlike my last project there is no deadline set on this so will be ready when its ready.

Also here is a couple of wee pics of my dads spitfire, 4 years ago this was pulled out a barn up north completely in bits with its back broken, not far left to go now. Pretty much all my dads work, I done some bodywork to the bonnet that it.

Bout 2 year ago....

Now....

More updates on the Mk2 soon. If anyone has some part I might be interested in then let me know. Need a set of wings for a start.

Few more pics of the Mk2's strip down.

All the windows and sunroof removed.

Cleaned off all the old wax from the inner wings. Will be re-waxed again.

Other side has a wee bit of rust but only cosmetic.

No rust round any of the window frames.

Rear arches off.

Big dent in the rear panel which will need a fair bit of work. Hard to tell from the pics but its like a deep score right up the vw badge. No point replacing it if there is no rust about it.

Another boot floor shot.

Passenger floor pan.

Inside drivers side inner arch where it meets the rear quarter. White stuff is whats left of the inside of my headlining. Mice have chomped through it.

Other side.

This pic is the inside of the passenger rear quarter where it meets the door frame. And the inside of the sill.

Other side.

Last two pics show the inside of the rear wheel arches and inside the sills.

All original with no rust, maybe the odd bit of surface rust but that will be treated. Will cavity wax all this eventually. I am well pleased with the condition of this car, it just gets better and better. There is serious potential.

Thats pretty much the strip down of the body done, next will be the removal of the engine and box and get the bay sorted out. Will leave subframe though as want to keep it rolling.
