Gearstick stiff left to right
« on: 08 September 2018, 14:03 »
The car hasnt been used much last couple of years, when I took it out of storage early 2017 the gearstick was tight across the gate (I believe this translates to in/out or up/down on the shift tower). I thought it might free up, but it didn't.
I garaged it again last winter and only just have it back on the road. The lever remains tight, and doesn't return to its resting position, making it hard to judge the shift into 3rd and 4th.
There was a slow (undetected) coolant leak in the vacinity, has this played a part?
Ideas appreciated!
Thanks

I've done a few miles now. Still the same. Have to consciously shift into 3rd which is driving me nuts. Are these meant to be sprung return, is it within the shift tower? Whats up with this? :(

I've just spent 20 mins outside with a variety of tools and half a can of wd40.
It's fixed!
Reading into this a bit more, there's a small pressed steel arm on a pivot that the shift arm uses to control the in/out movement from the tower (this equates to the left/right action of the stick).
I'm guessing the minor coolant leak I had in the area had affected the free movement of the pivot.
Removed a clip from the end of the pivot and eventually worked it out from the bush. This reluctant movement was in itself was a bad sign. It was all pretty manky looking and the pivot slightly pitted.
Checked the motion of the shift tower and it was free moving and returning to centre again. Good sign the tower springs are OK ;)
Polished the pivot, flushed out the bush with wd40 and all refitted.
Works a treat again. Happy days

The unit circled was seized up:

The shifter links to it and pivots back and forth.
