the only problem i've heard of was on my mates polo, and it made it flat as a witchs tit, so the OE filter went back on and hey presto, back to normal. i think your best bet is to go for something like a K&N panel filter. not that you'll notice any difference to be honest.

The main difference people have told me about with k&n's etc is the noise.

Where do these mates in the pub stories come from?
Utter rubbish mate!

Get a K & N 57i induction kit - best thing you can buy for your car - it will love you for it!

I would recommend a k&n induction kit as well, or a k&n panel filter and drill the airbox.
They certainly do more than just make a noise.
On a gti/vr6 engine you will notice better mid-range pick up.
