Isn't this more significant of a deal than is really being publicised? Its probably responsible for the large efficiency gains, and if the article posted in the fuel thread is to be trusted (I think it is) then having the cam timing able to advance in response to the fuel mix means the GTI should be able to properly take advantage of high octane fuels so that it burns lower volumes. I wonder how much extra mileage this gives, enough to offset the higher pump price? If only there was a definitive test! Variation in driving conditions would make it hard to verify. I am now highly encouraged to try only Tesco 99 in my tank, which I probably would not have done without the VVT.
