I was driving at low speed, luckily slowing down to park and the drivers side door mirror glass dropped out and shattered. I remember this happening on my MK5, but I saw it before it dropped and stopped before it fell off and super glued it back on.
Anyway, I see theres some cheap ones on ebay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Right-Hand-Drivers-Side-VW-Golf-Mk7-2012-2018-Wide-Angle-Wing-Door-Mirror-Glass/253771206054?fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+VII&epid=12021683261&hash=item3b15f14da6:g:RF8AAOSwuOpbVa0o:rk:1:pf:0
Or would it be better to get the whole thing, with the heated element?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK7-VII-RIGHT-Driver-Side-RH-Wing-Mirror-Glass-Convex-White-Heated-Flat/131567452843?fits=Car+Make%3AVW%7CModel%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+VII&epid=1658022703&hash=item1ea20802ab:g:A1sAAOSwIeFbM5Ru:rk:1:pf:0
I'd prefer OEM so will see how much the stealer wants tomorrow morning.
Thoughts?
-
I'd always go oem so it fits properly. Also, any idea why it fell out? Did the glass become unglued from the backing plate? A salvage part might be worth looking for too.
-
No idea, car is June 2014, with 26k, I think it just became unglued, it has left a glossy surface on the backing plate, like it was the backing from the mirror itself, as the mirror that fell off is the mirrored both sides, so whatever backing the mirror had, is still stuck to the car, if that makes sense.
-
If the mirror is on heating setting a lot, the glue can harden and fail. You will just have lost the glass, leaving the heater element in the mirror housing. VW sell replacement mirror glasses which are pre-glued and fit straight into position. Up to you whether you want to mess with non-oem stuff.
-
Thanks for that

Very useful and worth noting. I'd have thought you'd need to clean the old glue off very thoroughly if the new part is to stay on for a reasonable time...

Mine fell off a few weeks ago as I was cleaning it. I used Silicone to stick it back on to the rubber backing of the heating element. My mirror heating is permanently on as well.
-
Mirror heating is never permanently on. It's got a timer on it which automatically cuts the heat to stop burning the element out.
-
Silicone will act as an insulant between the glass and the heating element.
-
I ordered just the plain mirror and stuck it on using thin double sided automotive sticky 3M foam tape and it's fine. £6.85 from eBay, job done.
And the glass heats up and works fine.

Nope works as quick as the other side, it is only a thin layer to adhere it to the backing plate. As long as you don't go silly with it you will have no issues.

Mine fell out today and smashed, drivers side. New one ordered from autodoc, link here, hopefully it fits:

Mine just fell off too, found this one was going to try... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Right-Side-Clip-On-Heated-Mirror-Glass-for-Volkswagen-Golf-2012-2019-0641RSHP/372465509236?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Well my near side mirror looked like it was rubbing the housing when it dipped on reverse and sure enough that had come unstuck from the element as well. Not sure how it didn't fall out when driving to work but yet again silicone saved the day and it is back in position.
-
I'll let you know how I get on when mine turns up.
-
Me too i noticed mine was loose when washing car just the other day, i managed to catch it and Gorilla glue it back on. same thing happened on a Touran i used to own.(2014 mk7 gti)

Lost both of mine weirdly in the same spot but a year apart. Anyhoo, did'nt mess about and went straight to the dealer.

What did they replace and would you have the part numbers. Still waiting on my autodoc order to arrive, the VW dealers I rang just had an ansa phone kick in.

My Passenger side one dropped out on Thursday driving home from work, lost on the dual carriageway.
No other damage to car, so luckily didn't hit bodywork.
Order a 9.99 replacement from ebay, will advise when it arrives.
Decided to check drivers side when i got home and it is also completely unstuck, was able to move it up and down with 1 finger.
Removed it, cleaned and refitted with double sided tape.
I do leave the mirror heating on all the time / auto, will switch off now and only put it on when needed.
-
The best approach is to get one from a breakers on eBay, you get a genuine part that way. The aftermarket ones aren't great.
Both have mine have now done the same thing, both replaced for about £15 each with genuine items.

doesn't matter if it's left on it switches itself off after a set time like the rear screen.

Yes, I understand it switches off (auto), but i assume as it comes on if temp is cold, the mirror heating is probably on much more than it needs to be?
The adhesive used from factory looks to be thin layer of silicone sealant type which has completely separated from the mirror glass i saved, there is no trace on the back at all. Whether it is affected by the heating i'm not sure, but certainly an easy step to take if it helps.
-
Maybe water is getting in and freezing and then when the element is turned on its coming away 🤷♂️
-
is there a common failure time going on here? Maybe on the 3rd service they should be rebonded?
Best not to leave your heated wing mirrors on for longer than you need, if not only to save the battery drain (which
I admit won't be huge) on an icy morning when the battery is taking a battering anyway with all your other ancillaries on.
Unless water is getting between the silicone and the glass with freeze/thaw contraction of the water going on, water will have nothing to do with it. Silicone doesn't last forever, and such a thin layer going through heat/cool cycles is going to make it even more likely to fail.

Mine's still being delivered, still not hit the UK. Down to "Pandemic situation and quarantine all processes are delayed, including delivery. With regret we can not predict the exact time frame."
-
Mines been ordered from ebay so will let you know how it fits....
-
Just a heads up fellas but you know its illegal to drive without mirror driverside?. Not in this climate you would be anyway.
-
What is it with Mirrors falling out ? I seen loads on forums and facebook of people complaining of this, but I don't remember it happening like this previously ?

We're probably running out of things to write about

My mirror has just turned up, the German postal service is still showing as in transit and not in the UK. Will give it a go sometime today.

Just fitted it, all good now. Mirror ordered 4-Apr, so 14 days for delivery at the moment from Autodoc.

My ebay one turned up Saturday, ordered Tuesday.
Fitted and all fine.
Details below if any one is looking for one.
£9.99, left hand Convex Mirror

Mine all fitted too https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Right-Side-Wide-Angle-Mirror-Glass-for-VW-Golf-2012-2020-641RAS/173806854656?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Just went for a drive, only the second time in about 4 weeks due to the lockdown. YEP, the damn glass fell off my driver side mirror today when I got to the bottom of the road driving at 30mph and smashed. Can confirm that it is just the glass, can see a slight bit of white where the glue/adhesive was but seems to have cleanly dropped off. What a joke.
My GTi is a 2013 and I bought it in December. Obviously mirror glass isn't covered under the warranty :undecided:

Temped to order these ones if they're good?
Will also be getting a quote from VW as no one in this post seems to have a quote from them for just the glass alone.
-
Not that mine has fallen off yet (touch wood), but what if like me you have the side blind spot warning system with the light in the mirror ? I assume they are different glasses ?

This is just a guess as I don't have that, but even if it did fall would a cable catch it?

 £64 just for a bit of mirror glass, I don't think so. Also in the email where I asked for the item number for obvious reasons.
Anyone received a good Ebay one they'd recommend?.
Preferably the closest to the original the better. The blind spot area on the end is really useful, plus needs to be compatible with heated mirrors.
-
Hi, what are you guys using to stick the new glass ?
-
I used a thin layer of Fish Tank Silicone I had lying around for both of mine and had no issues at all.
-

Most of them come with adhesive/glue already on the back. Tempted to put a tiny bit of silicone on too to make sure it doesn't happen again

My bloody mirror fell off today too and thought I got away with it until I saw a chip on the edge.
Can anyone confirm if the eBay ones look identical to Vw ?
And do I want convex on the passenger ? Thanks

I bought this one for my drivers side. I would assume the seller has one listed for the passenger side too if you have a look at their items. The fit is pretty much spot on, but that also depends on how good you are at sticking it on and getting it centre as I found out haha. Managed to stick mine on a tiny bit low but I tested it by adjusting the mirror in all directions and luckily it doesn't hit anything. It comes with the adhesive already on and seems to stick very well to the rubber heated mirror piece. As for the convex, you don't need it on the passenger side as you would be able to see the car without the mirror by looking out your window, only really need it for the drivers side but it's not essential. I like it tho.
Only thing I didn't like about the ebay replacement mirror was that it was slightly distorted in one corner. But for a £10 mirror vs a £60+ VW one you can't complain. It was minor as I didn't notice it until I stuck it on. Plus if it was worse I would've just asked for a replacement from the seller anyway. Ebay seller protection and all that jazz.
There was literally no glue on the rubber heating element from where my original mirror dropped out so it seems like whatever they are using to stick these on, it's crap. Probably worth pulling slightly on the glass every now and again just to see if it's a bit loose. If it is can just pull it off and stick it back on before it drops.

Thanks
I’ve ended up getting a genuine one off eBay £28 delivered.

Was it new or used?. Very good price tho as they are £60+ from a dealership

New and still in box. Hopefully Vw use a glue that sticks these days ! Knowing my luck it’s old stock from 2014 !

Do the genuine ones come with glue/an adhesive back or is it literally just the mirror?

It has the black plastic moulding stuck to the mirror.

I can't believe I've just read 5 pages about a mirror glass.
This place used to be all about engine swaps in Mk1 and 2s and the ins and outs of setting up the K-jet injection system. Is this what the world has come to?

Mk1 and Mk2’s used better quality glue 😂

That's because the mirror glass doesn't fall out in Mk1's & 2's. They've got nothing else to talk about

So you read every comment over 5 pages for a car that you don't own anymore, about an issue that you don't have .
Wheres the clown emoji ?!
