handling on mk4 gti
« on: 20 March 2003, 22:39 »
Does anyone else find the handling poor on the mk4??
The car seems to roll a lot when cornering at speed, will the car take "more" or am i likely to loose control if i push it harder??
Any recommendations on uprating suspension???
cheers.

the best thing to do is test the cars when it is safe to do so ie in a car park at night, you will then know what you car is capable of.  Dont know what availible for the mk4 but if you get it lowered its worth getting springs and shocks.  Check this will not void your warrenty as well.

Just fitted a Raceland suspension kit(?170ish delivered) to my 110+Powerboxed Gt TDi.Lowered by 40mm all round, with uprated shocks, big difference in handling, lot flatter during acceleration, braking and cornering, will let you know what its like after i fit my Audi TT 17" wheels and tyres.Lower it with a full kit, don't arse around with just springs done this with all my Golf Gti's(mk2 up) ,any queries reply to this post and i will get back to you as soon as possible(fitting new kitchen at moment!!!)

>:(the handling is crap (is it OK to say that ?) Had my 1.8t from new and have been dissapointed with both performance and handling. Its a great tourer, which is the meaning of GT I guess and the ride quality is good. But the engine and gearbox are mismatched in a bid to get a good 0 to 60 time it is really lacking when overtaking in the real world. The handling has scared me a couple of times when entering a bend fast it seems to get caught out, throws a wobbler then calms down, horrible. I intend to fit a set of Koni adjustables, for ?370 they seem like a good buy.

"sportier 1.8T, which has lowered suspension but retains soft damping, gets tiresomely bouncy on undulating roads as it hits its bump-stops." Quote from Tiscali motoring, which would explain why I thought my suspension was knackered...upgrades very soon I think.
