Is this worth the hassle? Cheers

I like it, and use it for 3 primary reasons:
1. Monitoring my MPG for the long journeys I do.
2. Setting area security alerts when the car is left anywhere for a long period of time (overnight for example).
3. Checking the car is still locked and not been tampered with when I have left it in a public place and I am away from it.
-
mine doesn't offer any of that. Does your car have a permanent connection to the web?

If you have the Apple watch you can also talk to your GTI and it will drive to meet you out the front places if you need to get away quickly...

Yup, MY19's come with an integrated Sim-card that gives the "Car-Net ‘Security & Service" pack via CAR-NET. This comes as standard on the GTD/GTI and R:

It's controlled by the user via the car-net app, or through the car-net web portal. :)

That explains it . Whereabouts is the SIM card located?
-
Ain’t it in between the two SD Card slots?

Bugger mines a 2018 Dec model.

It's model year that counts not build year. Check the calculator below to see if your car is a MY18 or MY19. My car was built late 2018 and registered in 2019, but it's a MY19...

If your car is a MY19 then it should have the option. :)

kmpowell & others, thanks for sharing all this with us.
I'm learning a lot about Car-Net and, how to find out the year of your model! Brilliant.
I had Car-Net installed by a dealer on my MY16 (oh dear) a couple of years ago now so I've not got the Security & Service functionality.
I love the news function and the weather is very accurate - and nice to see if its raining at the place you're driving to :-)
I also find sending Nav destinations from home to the car useful - saves time plugging them in when you get in the car.
We're house hunting at the moment so its good for that when you're going to view a property.

Wireless Local Area Network. Just setup a hotspot on your mobile and connect the car to that and you’re away.
Interestingly my dealer told me they no longer bother with Car-Net and only really push it for used car buyers which seems rather odd. I registered it anyway and appear to have three years free subscription. I’ll have a play with it over the weekend. And the Car-Net ;-)

For MY19> it's an eSIM, not a SIM.
VW won't (I think they simply can't) confirm to me where it is embedded, but from my research so far it's either in the Discover headunit, or up in the cluster by the SOS button.
