Title: Shaun's Rusty Bed On Wheels Takes Him Away On A Trip
Post by: SoundillusioN on 03 July 2012, 18:24
I haven't been on the forum for around 2 months.... Gone through a bit of a tough time in my personal life and everything I had going on including the MK1 project came to an abrupt halt as a result.

Things are back to normal now pretty much and we have just purchased a friend for the golf.

Say hello to what will one day be known as, The Akai Golf Racing Team Bus.

It's a 1984 T25 Transporter Panel Van (now with windows)
1.9 DG Wasserboxer Engine
Low Mileage (well, I think so anyway)
Very basic camper setup inside
Needs a lot of body TLC, especially up front.
However it's MOT'd until next April so will be doing very little to it for now. I NEED to get the Golf up to scratch in time for VW Action.
It's Taxed until September and I have just insured it ready for me to pick it up tomorrow night.

So for now I'm just going to do service essentials and get some use out of it before it becomes a money pit.

Oh that's great Kirk, show me up with your pristine example why don't you!

That looks phenomenal, lovely colour too.  I hate to think how much you spent to get it to that standard, have you got a build thread somewhere that I can have a gander at?

PS... Do you always carry a boat on the roof?

Yeah wasnt cheap but saved a lot by getting parts from volksheaven in doncaster. I am planning on doing a build thread as it was dire before i bought it. Lol i was actually thinking of doin the roof in vinyl to look like a boat. In all its took roughly a year to get to this stage, its been hard but theres no rust at all on it now thankfully

Hahaha, you should do the boat vinyl, that would look great, certainly not something i've seen at show before!

Missed a trick, it's great doing a build thread while you work, however, it would still be great if you did one now with some of the before, in progress and and finished pics together to show off all the hard work.

I wish there was a breakers like that near me!... Actually, right now I don't.  Attention to the MK1 first!

I take it you're living in the van, then?

Shout me if you need any nolidge about T25s.  I've had a few.

Normally with a bit more grunt than a DG though.

Anyway - a few links you need to ruin you even more:

Bellhousings and shizzle:

http://www.rjes.com/

The motor to go on the back of them:

http://boxeer.com/

And to make it stop:

http://futbus.com/

Crack on.

No, thankfully I have my house.

Nice links, however none of the above is a priority for now. In fact, this van is a loooooong way off any of that.  I fear I may become a pest for you in the future but then again that's the beauty of a forum, you can ignore me whenever you wish.

DG isn't great but it's certainly not the worse.  It sounds surprising healthy although it does have a fault that I need to address as soon as I have collected it.

All will become clear once it's in my possession and I start listing everything that's wrong with it.. At the moment the cons certainly outweigh the pros but right now, I don't give a ****.

 No believe it or not, I've always wanted an age related van to go with the golf for years, I just never thought it was possible, it probably still isn't!   Although Alan's did make me want one more, and after seeing another friend recently complete an LWB T5 into a beast of a camper followed by me stumbling upon this wreck, I couldn't help myself!

Spot on Jay, just a wash, wax and blow dry (scrap the blow dry actually, something might fall off) and she'll be good as new!   :lipsrsealed:

Sounds good, I'm sure it will be fun (for now)..

I'd love a spittly or a bay but that's just not affordable/practical right now. Plus these things have so much more room in them! Anyway, this thing looks more like my golf, it's the same age and shares a few parts too. Can't wait to take a snap with them together!

Picked it up last night, drama free which was good.  Actually really enjoyed the drive. Cruised Plodded/chugged down the motorway quite happily at 70.  It has a slightly annoying hesitancy at low revs which I knew about and needs looking at ASAP, other than that, was all good.

The wood used for the makeshift camper interior is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to chunky and heavy!  Certainly won't be helping things performance/economy wise and will all need to be redone me thinks. Will post pics tonight as I couldn't take any last night, we had a monsoon and then it got dark.

OK, so here's some snaps of the van at it's new home after a good scrubbing, well not too good or I would have ended up putting my hand through it.    Also I had to be careful where I pointed the pressure washers lance at times!

I had to do something terrible and temporarily steal the Golfs wiper blades, the vans were sh*te!

Also note the Caution Tape... it's not covering anything bad on the arches at all.  :lipsrsealed:

The tints on it are great, very mild up front but limo at the back which is nice and private, day or night.

All of the interior needs to come out at some point (probably over the winter),its been made from the most heavy duty, solid wood you can think off and as a result weighs a tonne! The carpeting is rubbish, I'd say its all function over form at the moment.

Until winter comes the missus made it more cosy by stripping everything out, boil washing curtains and buying new covers, cushions, some wrap for the worktop etc etc.  She spent the whole day sanitising the interior.

Good thing is, in it's current form it has plenty of storage and a little fold out table.

Errrrm, without going into any detail I will say this, the suspension is surprisingly firm when parked up and handles very well on the twisties when driving.

No squeaks or rattles inside or out, which is great because I hate things rattling and squeaking when I'm driving and certainly wouldn't want it when stationary!

Despite the above there are plenty of things that are wrong with it, will get to that shortly.  Should get home after work and find a nice big parcel!  :lipsrsealed:

Title: Akai Racing T25 Team Bus Project - More Pics P5 - New Twin Box Exhaust P6
Post by: SoundillusioN on 12 July 2012, 11:49
Big parcel arrived which contained this:

When I originally went to view the van it's exhaust was blowing really badly from both sides of the silencer joints. It had been badly patched up with Gun Gum and Fire Gum all over the flanges. So much so in fact that you couldn't even see the mounting studs/nuts anymore.

Believe it or not, it took nearly 3 hours to get the old silencer off.  Once I'd chiselled all the cr@p off to reveal the nuts I soon realised they were never going to come off, especially since 2 of them are difficult enough to see let alone get to when they're fecked!

It quickly became obvious that the Gun Gum was there because somebody couldn't be bothered to go through the pain of dealing with the hard to access nuts.  If they had done the job properly in the first place the silencer would still have been fine.

No pictures of the process as it was far too much of an ar5e for me to even give a sh*t at the time.  After 3 sheared studs, drilling, grinding cutting and blood running down my arms, I got it off!

I feared that the Flanges on the manifold side would be shot but luckily they cleaned up OK.

During clean up of one side

Fitted.  Bit dark at this point.  Had to cut the rear valance in two places to make room for the tailpipes.

Cheap setup but does the trick.. Now that it has a silencer for each bank it sounds fecking amazing!  More importantly it's driving soooo much better now.

When I realised I had access issues because of the quirky arrangement I had a quick gander at the Haynes manual.  I actually laughed when I read the guide.

All it says is something like, "Due to the various engine and exhaust designs that depend on the year and model of the vehicle, and the limited access to some of the mounting points, you may find removal and fitting rather difficult, especially if corroded.  Essentially it is chiefly held together with bolt on sections.  Look at the diagrams for reference.  Fitting is the reverse of removal."

Useful!

The diagrams are exploded views of the various systems whilst not fitted, so barely any use at all.

You'll find undoing the engine bar mounting bolts on either chassis rails will allow you to lower the engine and gearbox as a unit a fair bit, still connected at the front.

That would have given you a lot more access.

Oh well.

It will run a lot better with a good exhaust system - the WBX likes a good, correctly sealed system on it very much.

You're just lucky that you weren't taking off the exhaust at the manifolds.  Those M8 nuts will be wasted away and the studs will probably shear and they're in a nice soft alloy head, which you do NOT want to take off!

Check the condition of the petrol pipes under the van and make sure they're good.  Losing the whole van to a fire would not be a good look and for the cost of a few hoses/bit of hardline it's a safety measure worth taking.

Having a camper is f*cking great.  We're desparate to get another one when funds allow.

Also check the water pipes that run underneath and that your temperature guage works. The last thing you want to do is overheat one of these as you're into head off territory and as Tom has said above you DO NOT want to be going there.

Damn it!... I did actually wonder if it was possible to lower the engine without too much hassle but assumed it would have been a ball ache, with hindsight it would have been nothing in comparison to what I ended up going through.  Runs so much better now I'm confident the exhaust system is tight.  (still not quite running as it should though)  :undecided:

I already noticed that the manifold nuts/studs don't look too pretty but thankfully all of the pipework looks pretty healthy, hopefully not something I will have to worry about in the near future, I'd like to think it would last the engines remaining lifespan.  :lipsrsealed:

Thankfully the van benefits from a brand new fuel tank, lines, and filter.  However, I have recently noticed that when the tank is brimmed I can smell vapour when driving for the first quarter of the tank it consumes.  After that its fine, I have checked everything I can see, lines, filler neck etc, any ideas?  Decent powder fire  extinguisher installed.

Yes they are great, even this old heap, starting to think I won't be able to live without one now.

Also check the water pipes that run underneath and that your temperature guage works. The last thing you want to do is overheat one of these as you're into head off territory and as Tom has said above you DO NOT want to be going there.

Nick

Water pipes have been replaced with plastic ones, common mod I believe, temp gauge is working perfectly, thankfully.

As with anything, I did do some research before viewing/purchasing albeit a little rushed (there's some great websites out there).  Thank you both for your pointers though as my knowledge on these is nowhere near what I have on the golf.

I take it head work is a bi*ch on these then.

Will put a little list together in a bit with the good and bad bad points of this vehicle that I have discovered so far.

The WBX motors are great until you have to take the heads off.

Because it's an alloy block and head with steel head bolts there's bimetallic corrosion on the studs - they go brittle and snap, leaving the remains of the stud in the block. The only way of getting the remains of these studs out is pretty much spark-erosion.

The 16 litres of coolant should be changed every other year to try and minimise this corrosion (although probably a bit late to help yours too much!).  Changing the coolant will also prevent the rubber block to head seals from hardening and then starting to leak.

Drive it hard and regularly and it should continue running happily.  Pussyfoot around it and you're more likely to get problems.

Petrol fumes when the tank is full suggest there are breather pipe issues on top of the tank.  If you don't know if these have been replaced it would be worth dropping the tank and replacing the breather network.  While it's down make sure it's well painted on top, as the steel tanks on the 2WD vehicles can rust out on top.

I have been a little reluctant to rev the nuts off it despite the long gearbox ratios demanding me to, mainly because I've not had it long and have had little confidence in it, especially since I haven't performed any kind of service as yet and the mashed exhaust system hindering it's performance.

Now the exhaust is fixed I will give it some beans, especially after it's had an oil change.  (usually the first thing I do with any new vehicle).

Although the body has seen better days (mostly because until now it spent it's whole life by the sea), I have been assured that the coolant and oil have always been changed with the correct grades regularly.  The previous owner was fully aware of the importance of using the correct coolant to avoid the internal erosion these wbx's are prone to, it seems to show signs of this care at least.

This arrived yesterday for the service I have planned for it next week.

Need to look up a cheap yet convenient source for oil, I believe it prefers 15w40 mineral.

Hmmm, when I spotted the shiny new tank I decided I wanted to paint it anyway, I did read that are prone to rusting quite rapidly due the moisture that gets trapped above it.  Will do this sooner rather than later then and check all the pipe work.

I need to get to the bottom of one last running issue now.  When driving, it hesitates at low RPM (pushing against a brick wall feeling) and once it gets to around 2.5-3 (estimated) it pulls well.  I suspect (hope) it's a timing issue. Lead's, dizzy, sparks, coil and Hall sender seem fine. Might be carb issues, can't even be ar5ed to go there!

No, no - you don't have anywhere near enough vehicles in your fleet at the moment - you should buy it ASAP.

Check the vacuum pull-down on the dizzi as well as the timing.

I sold it to my mat who lives in the block of flats behind us. It's parked just by where we park all our cars, lol.

I've been musing buying it back for a while, he doesn't use it, it has no MOT and he's thinking of selling up and buying a car. Since he's had it he's put a recon engine in it and driven it about 200 miles in 3 or 4 years.

That can't be doing it any good, it needs driving, it needs you as it's driver!   What motors in it?  I wish previous vehicles I have since sold on were still local, I'd be snapping a couple of them up if I could.

Same as mine then, as seen only yesterday in this thread I put an empi twin on this, airbox setup is still standard at the mo.  Only thing i'm not happy about is where it's getting its feed from.   Must be sucking in so much hot air!

Triple figures!? feck!, be lucky to get past 80 in mine.

I can't see the pix at work but assumed it was an Empi. It will rust badly and quickly, they are shocking quality but sound brilliant. My first one was dead within 18months.

When I got triple figures it was completely empty and I may have been racing another empty T25 panel van to see who's wasquicker as he had a 2.0 Aircooled one. We called it a draw as we both bottled it.

Ah, well that explains it a little then, mines fully laden with all sorts! you must flick through the pics when you can then.

I am aware of the pros and cons of these silencers, I love the sound but know they don't weather well.  I have been allowing the paint to burn off so that I can then repaint it this weekend.

For once I got a clear, dry day to get on with some grafting and managed to split my time between the bus and the golf.

After having to cut the rear valance to fit the new exhausts, paint was needed to protect the cuts.  Saying that though, the lower half of the valance wasn't in the best state anyway and had a couple of small holes, surface rust and scabs.

Treated myself to a new Makita Angle Grinder and put it to work.  While I was at it I attacked the bumper which has seen better days and could one day do with being replaced.

Filled little holes and scabs with steel putty and then got busy with some satin hammerite.  I have also given the silencers a quick blow over with high temp paint now the shipping stuff has burnt off, although the process wasn't photographed.

Will do the job for now.

Random shot, Golf was awoken while the paint dried.

Split charge relay.

Well that's not fair now is it... You could have given someone with no experience of campers or dual battery setups a chance to have a guess.

My friend Alan spent a small fortune on his setup as it was "plug and play"... something daft like £90!  When I took a close look at it I didn't see anything special other than the fact that the important bits were in a pretty box with a couple of kill switches.

What I have cost me £15 but I will be beefing it up a little.  I don't have much confidence in the tiny relay within the circuit so will use it to trigger a more heavy duty relay.

My dad had a T25 camper (B reg, same burgundy colour as the front of yours)

Mostly cosmetic IIRC
Rust on the arches, which had been treated then painted, but the paint didn't quite match...
Interior was a little bit scruffy, and the canvas tent for the roof was a bit ripped in places.
I think there were engine issues too but I'm not sure what exactly.
Still. he sold it to the carpenter who owns the yard round the back of his house so the camper's still in exactly the same place!

Seems like a fair price then.  Mine has had the rear quarters and arches recently replaced but the front arches are fecked and need replacing. What engine does it have?

Would do my head in to sell it to someone so close I think.  Watching someone fix it up and then realise you want it back.

Think it was a 1.9 engine.

He had to sell it to help fund his motorbike trip to Mongolia (which he's on now)
My step mum was telling me how she heard the van fire up the other week and it made her sad!

The thing that worries me is that neither my dad nor the bloke he sold it to are the types to restore something.
They both will just bodge it to keep it going until there's nothing left to bodge, which is a shame because my mum bought it originally about 10 years a go and it was great, then she sold it to my dad which is when things started to go wrong

Been busy on the Golf the this thread hasn't had much action... However, it's been out and about quite a bit and is running really well now...

I have started to get some parts for it.

Found someone who was breaking an old V8 converted show van.  Took it's doors and dash tidy... Both of which need work but the doors are in better condition that what I've got at the moment, also it means I can work on them without paralysing the van.

Dash tidy is essential in these as there is nowhere to put anything, especially drinks.... Often they go for silly money, found mine for 99p but it does need some attention!

Also found a better tailgate for it for a good price, also needs work but far less than the one it's got.

People sell parts for these for crazy money, I just refuse to pay it!

Harlequin FTW! :afro:

I don't think it will ever happen!   In fact the missus is starting to take over as far the plans for it go, my original plan may be quashed for her own.  Luckily her suggestions have been pretty good so far.

This thing is still running.  Nothing adventurous has happened as it's been a mad few months at home/work but I have been driving it every weekend without fail to keep it happy and it's still running well.

Ordered some bits for the golf which I will be fitting when they arrive, then I will need to start blowing some holes in the van with a new welder as it certainly needs attention in this department.  Plan to go away, camp up and see some family in the new year before the MOT runs out then you can sit back and watch the updates of me destroying it!
Title: Akai Racing T25 Team Bus Project - Round the clock... Again?

Had a nightmare with this last night... I'm planning on going away on my tod to go see some family so will be spending the next few nights in it.  It was over due an oil change, checked levels instead and ended up over filling it like a twit.  You should have seen the smoke...  Ended up doing the change after all.

Still quite smokey, smelt of fuel this time though, had to feck about with the carb and timing again. Gotta love the Pierburg 2e!   Sorted now though and running very well again (for now)

The Empi exhausts I fitted not that long ago looked shocking (surface rust).  So prepped and painted the boxes in high temp paint, this burnt off!... Painted them with spray on hammerite, this stayed!

Added some ambient LED lighting to the inside... Looks like a mobile whore house now.   Pic later.

This happened last night, I believe for the second time in it's life.

So this got some proper use earlier in the week, spent 3 says in Norfolk to see some family.  It clearly needed a high speed run and the route to Norfolk is very brick friendly.

Gave it new filters and an oil change the day before which involved me over filling it!

Put another 400 miles on it. it was faultless other than drinking more fuel than the mustang!!! on the A14 it happily sat at 70mph (GPS) 75 on the clocks although in an attempt to save fuel at one point I tried sitting at 60. That didn't seem to make much difference.  Despite clean exhaust output it's starting to smell rich again, will have to look into this but it's one of those engines you never, ever can get setup right!

Despite being 2 degrees at night I slept very comfortably.  Could have stayed in it much longer. Although I still haven't got round to wiring in the split charger, I had more than enough power from the leisure battery for beer fridge and movies.

  I bet it makes a massive difference.

I know I could have saved a fortune if I'd simply chugged along, but I hate travelling long distance below the speed limit and the van seemed happy enough keeping up with the traffic. It's just a shame it has such a thirst whilst doing so.
