1.3 into my clipper????
« on: 08 May 2008, 15:44 »
Was thinking of fitting a 1.3 motor and five speed box out of a mk2 golf. The clipper previously had a 1.8 carb with auto box. I know the rack and some wiring is different to that on a manual. But, is the main carb, dizzy wiring the same?

sorry fella why would you put a 1.3 engline in a clipper? i'm guessing the negine dead in your clipper but why not just source an engine from a driver or another clipper cabriolet?

I know what you're saying, but i bought the car with no engine or box, was an auto. Due to escalating fuel/tax/insurance costs, i'm contemplating smaller engine.

awww i understand fella it just that a 1.3 in a clipper is going to be very slow because the car is quite heavy compare to a tintop mk1! i have seen a clipper with a lupo engine in and that worked quite well but he did have to change the dash etc and it ended up being quite a lot of work

i agree with the above, cabs are slightly heavier than tip tops, maybe see if you can get someone to take you out in a 1.3 tin top to see.

the clippers are cheaper to insure than the gti i understand. so it shouldnt be that bad.

Sounds like a lot of effort too!!!!

Update! Just been offered a 1.6 petrol engine and gearbox out of a mk1 Caddy for £100, so probably go for that instead!!!

  • It's not the speed, it's the sudden stops...

Get the pedal box too, as you'll really struggle to change gear without a clutch pedal, also, get the
re-inforcing plate for the clutch cable to bulkhead.
