Cambelt
« on: 02 September 2016, 15:34 »
I have a 2008 MK 5 Golf GTI, when is it advisable to have the cambelt replaced, the car has done 53K.
Is also advisable to have the water pump done at the same time?
Many thanks.

3 years and 40k miles is really a bit (read: very!) OCD.

5 years and 60k is still playing it safe. My current car has done nearly 120k already in just under three years and never had a belt changed. Think the change interval is 180k miles on the mk7 - I am pretty sure on mk5 officially it is check belt from 120,000km or roughly 75k miles and then every 20k miles... and replace if it looks bad.

On a 2008 car I would get it changed if it's still the first.

Mind you I once bought a car with only 70k on the clock that was 16 years old at the time and it still had first cam belt on it (thou this was the not so monstrously powerful mk3 1.8 with 75hp which allegedly is a non-interference engine).
