Timing belt info
« on: 22 August 2015, 09:01 »

I'm looking at changing the timing belt on my wife's 167,000 mile old GTI 1.8 20V non turbo. I last did it 30,000 miles ago when it had a full kit fitted - pump, tensioners etc. However, although 30,000 miles is very low for a change, the belt was done 8 or 9 years ago, so I'm really only doing it due to age. On this basis, do I need a kit or just a belt?

If I just fit a belt, how do I manage with the tensioner? I seem to recall taking a pin out after fitting it.

I'm not being mean, but I've just bought a TT for my wife which is having a full kit fitted at a garage due to not having evidence of when one was fitted. The Golf is going to my son, so I want it to last him, but don't have a big bag of money.....
