How was the journey home? Any problems?

Seeing her go off down the road on the back of a trailer wasn't too bad really, I've abandoned her since passing my test so I've not really been that attatched to her lately, and  I'm glad she's finally going to get the TLC she deserves. I remember getting rid of my first Mk3, I nearly cried haha.
Seeing the picture of her on somebody elses driveway seems weird though, I've owned her nearly 4 years and never thought I'd get rid of her

There's nothing more to it?!

Before buying the car he wanted to know if the floorpan was rotten or whether it was just the sills. The car was too low for me to have a look underneath it so I couldn't answer his question, although whilst putting it onto the trailer it grounded out so I had to go underneath the car whilst it was on the ramps and push it up from underneath and it appeared to be fairly solid!!

well today i started a little bit of stripping, no real shocks lurking so far although there is some water in the rear o/s footwell which i will investigate further when i get the carpet off!

think the enthusiasm comes from owning the car tbh, i would never go to these lengths on a mk3 as it would just be money down the drain.

well been thinking what to get started with next,

one idea is to get a loan of around 3k and have the shell welded/sprayed inside and out so its mint (thinking of a colour similar to this http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3187/2700463819_d8aaceb1d4.jpg)

then have the engine sorted, skimmed, flowed etc..

So after sorting the body on this car and getting a runabout, what else are you gonna do with the £3k?
Get an ABF fitted in the Mk1 ? That would suprise a few people at the lights.
You probably wouldn't want a much bigger engine in the front of a Mk1, too heavy.

i think for this year i will stick to the original 1.5 carb engine and have it all done to a pretty good show standard

The more you remove the cheaper the bill should be due to less labour.

Yes mate, a factory fitted MK1 sunroof is the same as a MK2.

only you can decide what you want to do.... heres a few things to consider, do you intend to keep the colour? Do you intent to keep the engine?... its a 5 door so only light mods would work IMO.   If it were me it would be old skool look all the way with it.

sweet, that widens my search for a sunroof!   think am going to keep it pretty original inc the engine(maybe just a weber carb) as for colour i will have to see how funds go but if i were to have it resprayed it wqould be either the same colour or a vw golden brown colour.

please dont go the fully custom/show look.
personally imho a car is to be driven not trailered around everywhere. go for a good resto and good non showy mods that make it go/stop n handle better, you'll be much happier with a car you can enjoy

opinions wanted guys.

should i do a proper job and remove the engine whilst making the shell solid?

now obvious answers is 'of course you idiot' however there are key factors affect this decision!

A. if i remove the engine im pretty sure i wont have the knowledge to refit it.

B. if i do remove the engine i will probly end up wanting to fit a vr6 in it.

bare in mind this is a driveway project with no undercover work space.

Unless your needing work on the inner arches / bulkhead or chassis legs then leave it in.

I'm guessing the bay is rot free as they are pretty solid there, if thats the case.. leave it in for now... sounds like pointless hassle to me for where you are at right now.

Yes the whole front end is rot free. The reason I considererd removing the engine is to tip it on it's side to weld the bottom but I think that's just too much work so I'll just find some other way if welding underneath it.

Get yourself some ramps, mine have too much angle for the car to get on them with the kit fitted so will be looking at getting some of these:

Yeah to be honest I think 80% of my lifts are rule book defiant but I don't take silly risks and my drive is a little steep in places.  My rule is if there is any doubt, just make sure the car has something to fall on, spare wheels etc.

What's the plan Stan?

I don't know if I can forgive you.....  :undecided:

The only way to make me feel better about this would be you giving me the red trim from your grille. Purely as a reminder of what could have been, and I need it.

haha yea shaun this is the plan..

i think the red is painted on anyway otherwise the grill would be yours :undecided:

the reason its going is because ive accepted that to continue i would need to fully strip it down and there is just no room to put anything because my bro has dumped loadsa stuff here because hes moving house, and theres a possible house move for us sometime this year too. Which means i can have a second car just not a project rot box . ive worked out i'll have just over a grand to spend on a car in around a month so can hunt for a more solid mk1 gti this time

As mentioned before, my neighbours are understanding but the missus not so.  She can just about cope with the mk1 i've got even though she hates it, but 2... hmmm, nows not a great time but if I had a spare 300 notes i'd be tempted! Having that sort of money spare would also be useful for the black one so I could never do it.  Although she did say that once mine was properly finished she wouldn't mind me having a second project if it meant I could make some cash out of it... If it had come up a year ago I may have bought it but it would have got stripped to supply parts for mine.  :lipsrsealed:

Real shame but I really hope you get a another soon mate... need more active MK1ers on here.  Let me know when you're seriously looking and i'll gladly help you hunt one down.

Even though the red surround is painted, is it clip on trim thats been painted red or defo just the grille itself? i'm missing the trim, have painted mine but looks much thinner as there is no trim, just the clip line, looks pants.
