servicing costs of 110/115 v 130
« on: 01 June 2006, 19:24 »

Hi

I am new to all this so sorry if this has been asked before! I am in the market for a golf tdi and cant decide between the 110/115 and the 130. The 110 is a lower insurance group but I read somewhere that the cambelt needs changing every 40k whereas the 130 is every 60k? Does anyone out there know of the major differences  when it comes to maintaining these two, i.e is one a more expensive that the other. how often to they have to be serviced etc. i have tried finding this on line but havent come up with anything. How much is a cambelt change for these cars? Are the 130's more reliable? i am going to be getting a 01 or 02 with 80/90K on and will be keeping for five plus years putting around 20k a year on. any advice greatly appreciated.

Also do the 3doors tend to cost more than the 5, are they in more demand as they look more sporty???

Thanks
helen

My 110 probably costs more to maintain than a 130, certainly in respect of cambelt changes! Performance is a big deal and now owning a 110 and seeing that you have the budget for a 130 then go for it. So much better performance for the same economy and cheaper maintenance. I've driven and do maintain a mates 130 and it is by far the better performer..........you just pay that much more in the first place.

The 115 and 130 (and 150) are the PD engines which have more torque and a 6 speed gear box. The cambelt was changed on my 130 just before I bought it  and cost £330 from a VW dealer. If the car you buy is getting close to needing done (60,000) either haggle the price down or if buying from a dealer, get them to change it as part of the deal.

They need serviced every 10,000 miles or 12 months for the fixed interval servicing or you can opt for variable life servicing which I understand uses a more expensive oil but the service interval depends on usage and mileage - calculated by the cars computer. Mine is set to the standard 10,000 mile one.

If anything the 3 doors probably are slightly cheaper as they are not quite as practical but I don't think there is much in it.

Go for a 130 - they are brilliant.

thanks! i am looking at a 130 with 107K on the clock, it is an 02 reg. always had petrol engines before so thinking of buying a car (for 5k) with that many miles is freaking me out!

I have seen a few higher mileage ones go on ebay for around £5 K so the price is about right. Its dificult to get the higher mileage stigma out of your mind - when I bought my 02 in March it had 66,000 on the clock  - so difficult to find low mileage ones but as its a diesel, if looked after it will go on and on! Mind you, petrol engines will last a long time as well.

yeah i was worried about buyin my tdi (130) that had 70k on the clock, but it drives great, seen a bora 130 tdi near me with 170k on the clock, they seem to run foreva.

a normal service at my local specialsit, costs me about £90, had new discs and pads on the back last time that cost me an extra £100.

not sure how that compares to dealership prices???
