I was pleasantly surprised find out recently that my Brother's old Green 5-door GTI 16V which he got new in Sept 1995, passed an MOT in January 2013 and could have been on the road as recently as Jan 2014 when that MOT expired.
He kept it until 2001 (when marriage and kids happened) and enjoyed it thoroughly, wasnt high milage when he got rid. It was the third and last of his golfs, (a mk 2 CL, and a MK 3 GL) and wasnt getting used when he sold it, things were starting to "go"... However it lasted nearly 13 more years.
The latest Mileage as of January 2013 MOT test was 209,354.
It is either dead or someone has it in a garage somewhere.
Not trying to trace just found it interesting. Was a great car. 3/4 of a VR6 for less money hehe.
