Title: Onepointeight turd - yet another build.
Post by: Dmonday on 20 January 2013, 00:31
Thought i may as well start a build thread for this to keep track, well..

My old piece of poop, that's now a little metal cube;

Started its life as a 1.4 8v, went through 13 cv joints with engine raised and chassis notched.. dropped a 1.8T in it with a K04-001 and ran it for a few weeks and snapped a load more so scrapped it..

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8217/8383742009_622bab01e1_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dmonday/8383742009/)

Then rocked a 320, E36 for a bit then that ended up in scrappy to as i had no job to pay for sumps every other day..

Now onto the latest project, hopefully a keeper!

Picked up the 1.8turd off my good friend joerg, he already had the turbo setup which was a bonus as it wasn't even that old.

Turbo's a franken f23 which pulled all to well in his A3.

Got it back to mine and my garage wasn't in the best of states to say the least..

Stripped the very *friendly* person down.

I don't have a work bench so decided to make one.

Crackle blacked pretty much everything, can't be arsed with polished poop

Then built it back up

Pretty much ready to drop in the shell i'm picking up at the end of the month B) obviously i need to do rods and am going for large port head but i want to get it in the car and running before i do that in summer..

Got a fair bit to go before it's running but it's all $$$ and apologies for the iPhone flicks, will crack out the camera soon :)

Copied that from my other thread but also picked this 1.9tdi 02J box up the other day too, had a word with Alex and Stu who run them and thought it would be the best option!

Clutch, Flywheel, Vacuum lines, Belts, Filters, Recirc valve ordered so should have the lump ready to drop in by next week  also went to have a look at the shell today and it's really tidy which is good, getting more then i expected with it but it's full of water from having no scuttle panel but i want to strip the inside out and clean it up anyway so not a big deal!

Haha well i postponed the E36 from getting scrapped as i bought it as a non-runner when i lost my job  but was a fun car while it lasted!

I like to think this one's a keeper, especially with the amount of money i'm putting into it ;)

I never had an issue once I dropped the 1.8T in the Ibiza? Shallow sump and engine raise, never hit once! I snapped one cv joint.. I lost my job so I stripped the Ibiza made my money back and bought the 36 for pennies just for fun.

But with the ideas I've been throwing about I will have travel and clearence, plus I'm getting custom cv joints made.

Forgot to reply to this, you can build an air ride setup for £600-800 front and back so it's not like its expensive.. but I will be always be static, only chance that would change is if I had kids but then I most likely would be driving something else daily.

I have indeed followed the threads since the mk3 Wagon! I know its never likely to be anything like standard ride height, but maybe thought you could go low, without going so far as notched chassis legs.  :undecided:

Not hating mate, far from it in fact! I love what you've done previously, but just feel maybe its time for a small compromise, no?

Ah no worries mate, i know the majority of peoples brains think a lot differently to me ;) but when you see what i'm dropping this lump in you will understand i need it at a semi-sensible height especially with me wanting to use it for my business :)

Computer repair engineer

Got all fresh nuts and bolts for the lump today, shorter aux belt for non-aircon 1.8t's (6PK1125), oil filter and cleaned gearbox up. Also got the K04 exhaust gasket and gave it to campbells to have the exhaust flange laser cut.

Still can't be bothered to get the camera out so more iPhone flicks..!

Oh well, here we go again.

It's said a wise man avoids a problem, a dumb-ass gets custom CV joints made.

Still, it's hardly likely you're going to start learning now.

Carry on.

And why wouldn't i get custom CV joints made when i'm going to be running over 350bhp through stock ones? Yes they can handle the torque but why not? Up-rated joints are less likely to have issues so that's one thing i won't need to replace.

p.s custom cv joints is avoiding a problem.

So standard joints can handle the alleged output you're aiming for without an issue?

So you're going to get custom joints (rather than new OEM) because?

Nothing to do with the dumb-assed angles you're going to run on the joints because whatever it is will be bothering any tiny change in the angle of the tarmac it sits on?

Jeez, thought i would have at least had the car before you started crying  and i'm running custom because i've known stock-ish height 1.8t's to each CV joints when running a decent amount of power through them, weather it's due to the power or just a knackerd joint i'm un-sure but why not go for stronger CV joints? Saves me hassle in the future.

I'm intrigued,  when are you going to get the shell?

End of this month hopefully :) girlfriend's allowing my to use her drive so i can put the time and effort into this one!

Nice project

Thanks dude  glad to see you're sticking cracking out the OEM conversions, very tidy i must say!

Sounds like a planned project. Looking forward to seeing how long it lasts mind but it'll be fun in the meantime like always.

Kinda agree with the joints but I blame hub conversion to accommodate TT brakes on our mk4 TDI.

Thanks guys :) indeed you do tweed ;)

Went to the mrs' house to do a bit of work on it, must of being owned by some utter mongs after PSI tuning.. wiring is awful and keep pulling wood screws out of everything too

But managed to get all the water out of it today, had about 3" in when i bought it. Fixed rear doors as one didn't open and one was dodgy and stripped most out.

All in all, the shell is tidy its self but wiring is an mess.. just have to put some time in redoing all the wiring.

Me and Joerg got quite a lot done today, literally just a lump of metal now! Taking a different route to what i originally planned so MK4 TDi box is up for sale and rear axle, which has been flipped & welded, comes with u-bolts and shocks.

Whipped subframe off as i need a new one, got rid of all the brackets and sh!t in the bay and there was £40's worth of fuel in the tank when we took it off so bonus, stuck it in clio dog.

More chopping tomorrow...

Wow

What box you using? What prop? What diff? What rear subframe?

More info needed  :nerd:

It's all coming together but i'm going to use a MK2 escort atlas rear axle and just going to get the propshaft shortened, they will go on to existing leaf springs with the U bolts but going to double them up to stiffen the rear up a bit :)

Got an 02M 6 speed box with R32 gears which i'm welding up so all the power goes to the transfer box :)

So we decided to get rid of the gay ass VW top mount setup and chopped them out, got rid of every little bracket and screw in the bay too, welded some holes up but ran out of wire until next time i'm down.

Ha good skillz

Would be my last choice of axle but its easy so meh.

You going to the trouble of making it rwd so why not go multi link rear axle?

I agree not the best choice of axle, but it's so simple on paper.. literally just bolts on :) i will be making it more solid with an anti tramp kit and custom brackets but the whole reason for doing it is because it's so straight forward!

DH is going to have a fit when he sees this haha!

I hear ya brother.

I think you'll change it when you find out how snappy it is. But could drift a lot. I know you'll love that so might be worth the hassle free rear end.

I'm measuring up a haldex rear axle this week to see how hard it would be to mount so will let you know when i've done that which axle i'm going to run :) never driven a live rear beam so couldn't really comment haha!

I should really get the camera out, more iPhone flicks!

Quite happy with today, me and Joerg got the top mounts chopped out for maximum caster and camber adjustability (not running that awful blue anodized sh!t) also offered the Quattro rear subframe / diff up to see how easy it would be to mount.. not that hard it seems, so i am going that route instead of a live rear beam :)

The lad that does my banded steels is making me up my custom top mounts, not really difficult just want them done well.

Me and Joerg took a visit to the Caddy today and started making up a brace for the rear subframe to mount to, got on better then expected but then ran out of welding wire so carrying on tomorrow after I've grabbed some!
