Don't go down that route, i bought a backbox on ebay that said it fits direct to a 1.4 golf (none universal) i then had to buy extra pipes to fit it and it hasn't made any difference really, your best bet is to get a gti or VR6  :wink:

Back in the day when I had a 1.4 like you I had a back box for a 8vgti , I slid scaffold tube in the original and the back box in the tube fitted great like above a lot of welding and chopping just for some noise , your best bet is to measure both pipe diameters. Get on eBay and find a reducer sleeve that's the right sizes for a straight forward job
