It will be interesting to see if the overall opinion changes as it becomes more familiar. At the moment i would say it isnt going down to well, i think it will change though.
I have set it up so you can have 2 votes per person if you change your mind later on. :smug:
-
Going to wait for a similar engine to the ed30 in this shape car now
-
People are afraid of change. FACT.
-
Present owners will always defend there current car. Its fact.
I have seen this happen with all the mark golfs from day one. Series 1 owners did not like the series 2 restyle or power delivery. mk1 S1orS2 did not like the mk2, no one liked the mk3 lol, mk4 bloated lost its looks and performance, mk5 mk4R32 owners hated. Its a repeated cycle you see it time and time again. Views will change on the mk6 once its been out a while as they nearly always do.
-
I like it, it looks similar to the mk5 but with more agressive styling. The interior looks much improved too.
-
love the Mk5 so i like this, but for me it isn't different enough, but then again the current GTI has been so popular you can't really blame VW from straying to far from a winning formula.i think though until i see one in the flesh i wouldn't shell out 20k+.
-
Its hot, BUT not different enough for me to swop
-
i really like it!
-
I agree the interior is better looking, but the front end just doesn't do it for me.
-
I really like it, I think it's got a bit of a sportier look about it that the MK5, don't get me wrong the MK5 still looks the sex, but I think the MK6 does it for me :)

Ditto... front end looks weak and nasty - even too angular from certain angles (no pun intended)
-
The 'ordinary' ones look better than the GTI.
A very cynical vehicle from VAG. The Mk6 Golf could destroy the company.
Tata GTI anyone?
Destroy VW? Hardly... but if they keep it up, they will disillusion people like myself who love all things VW and the GTI.. especially after the 'mistaken' overproduction of the Ed30 - mistaken my ar8e. I might buy the Mk7 in 2015 or whenever, but I think the Mk5 is just as good - note I didn't say better as I am sure this Mk6 is a great car, but it hasn't really moved on.
-
You'll all be buying mk6 Gti's in the next few years, just you wait and see!
I'd like one but cant afford it
It looks a lot more finished that the mk5, no nasty black plastic bumpers here!
-
Don't like it at all, but tbh I don't like the mk5 either :)
-

You nailed it.
-
ill admit i put no on the poll
just on the basis that, to me, its a mk5 with a different grille and lights

So true, I have seen coments like all these so many times. Last time it was mk4 R32 owners complaining about the mk5 R32. I even remember mk1 GTI owners saying similar about the mk2 when it came out 'not moved the game on' etc etc. Funny how history just keeps repeating itself lol.

But this time it really really is just a facelift! OK, the MK2 didn't look radically different to the MK1, but it was certainly an all-new car (I think?), a different body shell and bigger all round.
People also said the MKV was too similar looking to the MKIV, but the MKV was also a whole new car, from the ground up.
This time it really is just a face-lift. Facelifts never look 100% right to me, from some angles yeah, I can see it works OK, but grafting on a new face onto an old body usually ends up with mixed results :) Often the car looks better as it was originally designed...
-
To those who want it go ahead and get it.. but as Joe has rightly pointed out, this time it IS only a facelift. Even VW have admitted as much with a four year lifecycle penned for the Mk6. Its just there to reduce costs and thereby increase profits for VW. All I can say is, not at my expense. As for the Mk1 being the same as the Mk2, I have had many examples of both and they are completely different cars. I think this Mk6 GTI won't feel much different than the Mk5 GTI though.
-
To me its not just a face lift. They examined every single part and compared it to rivals and the current one for quality and build time and changed them where needed. There a hell of alot that's changed. ETKA update will prove that, granted its basically the same 'type' and layout but lots of components have changed by re-engineering them. People who are not Engineers or know the people involved don't know this and just judge a book by its cover or by what jounos say.
-
So cheaper bits that cost more to replace :thumb: :)
-
They're hot no doubt! Look at the vid of the GTi on the other post in this section - sweeeeettt

Erm - I am not a journo, and I can assure you it IS a facelift. The floorpan is identical. The firewall is identical, the front subframe is identical, the rear subframe is identical, the rear suspension is identical. See where I am going.
Of course some bits have been "re-engineered" but that happens anyway - even within non-changed models.
Apart from new exterior body panels, a new dash and interior trim, and a new donkey - it is nigh-on identical to the Mk5.

Keep going  ,one of them is slightly wrong and your slowly running out of things the same lol.
The thing is when you dig down, and i noticed you chose your choices and words carefully  theres more that has changed than not. So its far more new than is not.
Hell i could disect the mk2 golf part by part compared to the mk1 and come up with more thats the same than changed but no one calls that a facelift, (not nowadays anyway).
I normally agree with your posts especially the technical ones, this time I think I will agree to disagree on this one.
-
What specifically did you not agree with then?
-
Love the front/side the back looks dodgy
-
The engine is completely different is it not?

Hiya Doc.. just passing through?

edit: sorry wrong topic........
-
i think it looks alright, a progression more than a leap forward in design. Hopefully they will spend the next five/six years developing something with a bit more flair whilst learning
how to it more cost effectively than the mk5.
-
I love it and will probably be sticking a deposit on one next year. In 3 door form it looks better than the Scirocco.
-
I think it looks like a MK5 that has been stood on...
-
As someone who was *this close* to buying a mk4 GTI, I appreciate its looks and styling. But the moment I saw the MK5 GTI, I knew I had to have it! The mk6 doesn't strike me as something I must have, like the previous two marks did.
I agree the interior is better looking, but the front end just doesn't do it for me.
I have mentioned elsewhere that I love some of the interior, like the chunky buttons on the steering wheel and the general layout of the interior. I like the rear but the front end doesn't seem like a move forwards.

Nope I'll be waiting for the mk7 in my (hopefully) modded and remapped mk5, lapping all the mk6s!!!

So true
-
....
I'll wait to see one in the metal and test drive it before I pass judgement. But however good it is, I won't be trading in my very modified Mk5 for one.
The big question has to be if you didn't have a GTI at all, would you buy the Mk5 or the Mk5.5 Mk6 ?

if both were the same price and both had a KO4 and re-sale value was the same as each other then mk5 all flippin day long
-
....
Does the Mk6 GTI have a K03 or K04 turbo? - Surely a K03 because the power is only up by 10 bhp.
The Mk6 has a new generation ECU though and it's more difficult to crack, I've heard.
-
The MKVI has the new TSI engine with a K03 flavoured kick to it.
For me there are a few little tempters over the MKV:-
- Electronic diff - you tight VW guys lets have a proper ATB diff!
- adaptive suspension and choice of settings - but most likely still no match for a well set up MKV on coilies and uprated ARB's
-
mk6 is hot.
makes the mk5 look old now :lipsrsealed:
My mate is lucky enough to do testing on anything volkswagen so should bring it round soon. Ill get some pics
-
Now the pics of the upper range are sneaking out I actually quite like it. It has a much more agressive look to the front which I feel looks a lot better, also the GTTDI will be out next year so might be able to get one as a company car which would be nice :) Interior seems to be very similar but with white dials, looks like a nice place to be and they look to have removed those bloody uncomfortable knee bars from the centre console.
-
I love the front, but the back, well it's OK but it just looks like a Tiguan.
What is up with manufacturers today? They are all looking the same, look at the new Polo, just a mini MK5.
-
^^^^
Yes, that's the problem - The manufacturers make all their range look recognisably the same because they think it strengthens the brand and also because accountants run the companies and think 'economies of scale'. The result is very boring and certainly not what an enthusiast seeks.
:nerd:'s!!
-
^Its also because cars are styled by committee not styling houses anymore and it does not help they have to conform to so many stupid EU and goverment rules that sort of dictate the shape.
-
^^^^
Yes, I was forgetting all the EU legislation - Apparently also why so many factory production cars are so raised off the deck in case of pedestrian attack!
No wonder people like to modify their cars.
-
The Mk6, more like Mk5.5. It IS a facelift, I don't care about the extra engineering changes etc. From the outside it is a Mk5 with a new front and tail. That's what most people see, that's the 'face' of the car.
As for the corporate 'look', this has happened for years, just look at Merc, BMW and VW, they have always carried a 'look' of it's era since at least the 70's if not before. Eg Golf and Polos have looked similar at the front since the late 70's.
