Title: First service due on my GTD
Post by: The Doc on 11 November 2011, 00:55
Well my service counter binged 1000 miles to service today so it's time for my first long life service.

Booked in for 1st dec @ £103 - cheap as chips

Fingers crossed it will come back in the same condition as it went in

Is that VW price or a freelance garage Doc?

If not VW then they must use genuine VW parts to keep the warranty going.

which dealership did you use?

i bought my car from pullman sunderland and it had a headlight replaced under warranty and they made a right arse of it so won't be using them again

i found pullman durham a lot more professional though

I paid about £110 for my 1st annual service then about £130 for the 2nd but I assume the long life service is more involved. So, yes, cheap indeed.

Lookers Middlesbrough,  I find the service dept excellent but the sales dept crap, they didn't take me seriously when I was looking for a new car so I bought from a broker, now everytime I go in the same salesman keeps telling me to see him when I think of buying a new one.   Hmmmm not going to happen.

There is no difference between a longlife service and the shorter time and distance service its just the longlife is done at 20k or 2 years as against 10k or 1 year. They still use the longlife oil in both.

I paid £250 for the 3 year service plan which I think is now £290. While its under warranty for 3 years they may as well service it after then I will do it myself.

Mines currently in for its 3rd service, water getting in, several creaks, broken passenger seat, wind noise, creaky windows - windows going up then going back down themselves and the guy got me to sign something about updating the ECU but i see everyones against this, should i have told them to leave it ? :/ lol

Jonny its more if your car is mapped or not, if its not mapped then an update may sort little niggles out like engine stutter or poor mpg, any starting problems or so forth.

But if you have it mapped it will wipe the map off.

I was listening to the service guy the other day and they was charging £149 for T&D and £195 for LL?? Is there is difference in price of the oil?

Darren

As I understand it, dealers use LongLife oil for whatever regime your car is on, stands to reason really I think, if an oil is designed to go the greater distance for LL, then one would assume it's fine for T&D??
But I suppose you could demand the T&D oil if it's cheaper??

I was told they had to use LL oil on anything with a DPF  :undecided:

so can you opt out of the ECU updated?

i don't want any update done to my car.

I've got the servicing package so need to go to the main dealers and all i want them to do is the oil and filters and check over etc - no updates etc

way i look at it its my car and don't want them doing any work on it i don't want or need doing.

not that i think there is an update for petrol GTI's anyway?
Title: Re: First service due on my GTD
Post by: CJA321 on 12 November 2011, 19:35
Quite often the updates are recalls etc... Or service functions.

May not have any problem just now without updating, but its for things down the line.

Eg. ABS Module download or something, May not have a problem but its for the forseen future.

So if you dont get updates, it could go wrong. Or even worse go wrong when the cars out of warranty. Then ud even have to pay for the updates

Your choice thou :D

my vw dealership sells VWR remaps anyway so they can't really argue against remaps etc

If they want to be arsey they can refuse to touch the car , thats why ECU's are locked off now. I know some dealerships who won't go near a car thats been mapped!!

It depends on what kind of relationship you have with the dealer I suppose too?

VW don't want you P*ssing about with there ECU's and there products i.e. blowing turbo's !!

If you had one of their VWR remaps then fine; but you can't expect them to honour a warranty when the cars been chopped about by any Tom, Dick and Harry.

Well it appears that if these aspects of the engine and drivetrain upgrade are connected to a warranty claim these aren't covered by VW warranty VWR Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.volkswagenracing.co.uk/Tuning%20General%20Pages/FAQ.html) plus they don't do anything for TDI's.

pullman do vwr parts and this is on their website

Is the manufacturer's warranty affected?
Yes it is affected, which is why each VWR Upgrade Package includes additional warranty coverage. The VWR Upgrade Warranty covers only those aspects of the engine and drivetrain that can be proved to be affected by the fitment of the upgrade package. All other aspects of the vehicle's standard Volkswagen warranty are unaffected.

The VWR Upgrade Package supplementary warranty will exactly reflect the duration of the Volkswagen warranty supplied with the car, consisting of a two-year/unlimited mileage manufacturer's warranty and a third year warranty with a 60,000 miles limitation. Full details of the warranty coverage is provided in the warranty booklet, and will be supplied with each VWR Upgrade Package.

Their Stage 1 for the GTI consists of a rebranded Pipercorss Panel filter, Rebranded Milltek Cat-back exhaust and a rebranded Revo map!!!

Certainly buying the three things separately would be quite a bit cheaper....

yeah i spoke to them and for the filter it was about £90 or something! i paid £30 for my pipercross. the milltek was about £800 and their rem pap was over £600 or if you buy the 3 together its about £1500 fitted.

much cheaper to source the parts yourself.

Apparently the map is their specification and not a generic Revo map, also the Millteks look nice with VWR stamped on the back, I really did toy with the idea of getting the VWR Stage 1 a while back.

They said they'd knock some money off if I didn't want the warranty!!!!!

Depends really, mine has been serviced every year since purchased and has had its second service in July, so going by £103 every year would be £309 still reckon it's a bargain.

So you would have only had one longlife service at £103 in three years saving you either £147 or £197.

This is my first and only service so I've saved the same amount
